Everett Thomas, vice - president of the society presided, aijjd introduced the speaker of- the evening, James Johnson frpm the Illinois Railway Museum at Union. [Mr. Johnson showed a colored film which he had made in 1967 called "Top Secret-Union Railroad". The film was humorous and informative and showed how the Railway Museum was organized and how it operates, liie organization started in 1953 with the purchase of a car fifom the Indian Railway factory lot in North Chicago, and grew to have thirty pieces of equipment by 1962. In 1964 the equipment was moved to Union, and located on right-ofway which was purchased from McHenry county in 1958. They started constructing their main line in October, 1965, and by July, 1966, had started operations for the public. They operate for the public daily between Memorial Dcty and Labor Day, on Saturdays and Sundays during May, and in October they give rides on Sundays. Most of their equipment has been purchased but some of it has been given to them by railroad companies or private car lines. The enthusiasm these young men show for their project is contagious and the audience responded with many questions. There are great plans for future expansion, and considering the speed at which the museum has been growing and the amount of work accomplished by the volunteer workers, their plans should be successful. Membership is open to anyone and everyone and contributions for furthering the work of preserving this important part of American life are welcomed by this non-profit organization. The program was sponsored by the McHenry County Historical society as a way of showing what is being done locally to preserve American History. The Historical society presented Mr. Johnson with an enlarged print of a photograph taken by Gus Persson of Woodstock which is part of a collection of early Woodstock photographs taken by Mr. Persson and donated to the Historical Society. The photo presented to Mr. Johnson for the Railway Museum showed a large crowd of people assembled at the railroad depot in Woodstock in the year 1910, apparently waiting to greet a celebrity arriving by train. The society would appreciate information from anyone who remembers what memorable occasion prompted this large turn-out at the railroad station. Alan Krech, the vocational English and Reading teacher from Marengo Community high school, showed some of his large: collection of keys. He gave some interesting and little - known facts about keys. He said that the key is made first and then the lock, and that the first lock and key was developed in Egypt 4,000 years ago.
