On Nov. 5, 1968, the people of the United States will elect a new president and congress. On Nov. 5, 1605, Guy Fawkes and some other people planned . to blow up the king and parliament of England. Hie Gunpowder plot, as it was called, was exposed, and the king and parliament were saved. It is now a tradition in England, World Book Encyclopedia notes, to burn Guy Fawkes in effigy every Nov. 5. Fireworks are usually set off around the effigies and fireworks displays are given. Political fireworks in the United States; traditional fireworks in England. tiOn of the widowed Jefferson as well as that of her husband, James. Dolley was also a heroine. When the British invaded the capital during the War of 1812 she saved many state papers and a portrait of George Washington. The first mistress of the White House was Mrs. John Adams. The mansion was uncompleted when the couple moved in and Abigail Adams was unimpressed with her new home where she had to hang out the family wash in the East room. Colorful "Skeletons" In The Closet Hie Democratic Party has some colorful skeletons in its closet. The Barnburners, for example, were a group of New York Democrats in the 1840's who were accused of being willing to destroy the party in order to bring about certain reforms. Tliey got their name from the story of a farmer who burned down his barn to free it of rats. In the early 1800's, people who wanted to keep Tammany in control sprouted the emblem of a buck's tail in their hats and were labeled the Bucktails. . In 1835, the conservation wing which faced defeat on a proposal, turned out the lights in Tammany Hall and walked out. The radicals usedthenewphosphrous friction matches, called "leco-focos" to rekindle the hits and were promptly nami Loco-Focos. In Virginia in 1880's, disfatisifed Democrats and Negroes formed the Readjuster Paity. Their candidates for governor and the two U.S. Senate seats were elected -- and {hen declared themselves Republicans. li The Republicans, too, have chosen some picturesque labels, kfyout the time of the Readjusts, the GOP was split between $he Stalwarts and the Halfbreeds. Major Impact In Sag States The voting in seven big states will have a major impact on the outcome of the 1968 Presidential election. Here are the states and their Presidential voting records from 1900 to 1964, as compiled by World Book Encyclopedia: --New York: 43 electoral votes; voted for 10 Republican candidates and seven Democra- "-^^Siforniar £6' electoral votes; voted for nine Republicans and seven Democrats, with one election going to the Bull Moose party of Teddy Roosevelt. --Pennsylvania: 29 electoral votes; voted for 11 Republican candidates; five Democrats, and once for the Bull Moose party. --Illinois: 26 electoral votes; voted for 11 Republican candidates and eight Democrats. --Ohio: 26 electoral votes; voted for 10 Republicans and seven Democrats. --Texas: 25 electoral votes voted for 14 Democrats and three Republicans. --Michigan: 21 electoral votes: voted for U Republican, five Democrats, and once for the Bull Moose party. During the past two weeks the students of Mrs. Lawrence Huck's World Cultures class have been organizing a mock presidential election for Mc- Henry high school, East campus. Registration was held Tuesday, Oct. 22, and Friday, Oct. 25, where students received the necessary registration cards and were assigned to designated precincts to report the following Tuesday. On election day, the polls were manned at four different precincts through the entire day, in shifts, by the students. Purpose of registration was to make the students' exert some effort for the privilege of voting. Out of 960 students, 493 registered the week preceding the election. Out of those registered, almost all voted. In addition to voting for the president, the ballot also included a vote for Senator, Governor and the question of changing the voting age. A write-in space was also provided for all the offices. Here are the results of the mock election: 1<JC< v The only bachelor President Of the U.S. was James Buchanan. Over and above the loud angry voices of passion^ and confusion America is hearing a strong genuine voice - a y sincere voice - a voice that rings true and clear over the nation. The voice is Richard Nixon's. Richard Nixon's campaign has been aimed directly at the heart of American conscience and he is asking for all the nation to join the common battle for all of us. Hubert Humphrey, pretender to the throne, knows he cannot solve the problems of our country with his mouth and he is making a lot of false promises for the sake of votes. Have you noticed the atom bomb mushrooming up into the sky in his NBC television ads in which he is attacking Mr. Nixon? Does this remind you of the same thing they did to Mr. Barry Goldwater in 1964? The only thing lacking was the picture of the little girl walking through the field of daisies and then the finger ready to push the button to blow up the world. This time America will not fall for this deceitful and disgraceful line of hokum. The blimp from Minneapolis is sb full of hot air that if someone struck him with a pin he might take off for outer space. The Johnson - Humphrey regime is trying desperately to bring a halt in the bombing in Vietnam before election day. The end of the war is what the people want and would be happy to end the war even the day before election day. We do not think this will help "Minnesota Fats IP' because the people are on to these political four flushers. We all want the slaughter to stop in Vietnam. The people of America will wonder why the Johnson - Humphrey machine didn't work as feverishly to win the war before this. We have spilled the blood of 30, OOOAmerican boy sand 100 billion dollars --for what? ' Since the civil war we have had four wars - all started under Democratic administrations - does this give us something to think about? We feel the people, both Democrats and Republicans, are fed up with the feudal power the Johnson-Humphrey machine has built up for their own political lust. "Spend and spend and then tax and tax and elect" is apparently their motto. Both Johnson and Humphrey are now publicly in every speech in desperation attacking Nixon and accusing him of the same things they themselves have been doing as a party for over 30 years. No, Hubert, the Clown Prince of Mismanagement isn't going to fool the people this time. He is still part and parcel of the war in Vietnam; bombing or no bombing, inflation that is robbing the wage earners of their take-home pay, and the breakdown of law and order. We think the people are fed up. The Dixon Evening Telegraph is proud to endorse and support Richard Nixon for President of the United States. Before the primary we supported Governor Ronald Reagan, our native son, and even then we stated we would support Richard Nixon if he were the nominee and we keep our word. AGE (The above information was* supplied to the Plaindealer by * Diane Alvary and Becky Lieb-; man.) Fmtis' And Fi Only three Vice - Presidents have ever been elected to the highest office in the land without first serving out the term of a President who died in office. They were Martin Van Bur en, elected in 1836; John Adams, elected in 1796; and Thomas Jefferson, elected in 1800. Only three Presidents have come directly from Congress. They were James A. Garfield and Warren G. Harding, both senators from Ohio, and John J. Kennedy, senator from Massachusetts. vote for their party's candidate, but the pledge was broken in 1948 by a Tennessee elector and in 1956 by an Alabama elector. NINETY-FOUR PRECINCTS IN McHENRY COUNTY' Illinois has a total of 5,676,- 131 registered voters for the Nov. 5 general election, Secretary of State Paul Powell has announced. This is an increase of 334,- 409 over the total for the 1966 general election, and an increase of 141,455 over the total for the last presidential year election in 1964, Mr. Powell said. The registration figures are based on totals submitted to Secretary Powell's office by county clerks and boards of election commissioners in the state for their respective jurisdictions. Secretary Powell also announced that there will be 10,- 694 election precincts in the state, 73 leps than in 1966, but 679 more/than in 1964. Mc- Henry county contributes 94 precincts to the total. The most popular profession for Presidents seems to be that of a lawyer. There were 23 lawyers among our 36 Presidents. - When the people go to the polls on Election Day, they don't choose a President but members of the Electoral college. These electors, equal in number to the members of Congress plus three from the District of Columbia, actually elect the President when they meet in December. The electors are pledged by custom to Franklin D. Roosevelt won the greatest number of electoral votes of any President since Washington, who was unanimously elected, with 523 in 19- 36. But James Monroe beat FDR's percentage. Monroe received all but one of the electoral votes in his second term, Tammany Hall, local Democratic headquarters in New York City, is named after the Society of Tammany, founded in 1789 as a "fraternity of patriots". The original Tammany, was a Delaware Indian chief known for his wisdom. The President who served the shortest time in office was William Henry Harrison, who died one month after his inauguration. But some persons claim that David Rice Atchison, a Senate president pro tempore served as acting President for one day; That was March 4, 1949, a Sunday -- and Zachary Taylor refused to be inaugurated on the Sabbath. FRI., NOV., 1, 1968 - P IAIN DEALER - PG. 13 Carpentier For OlSccj (Guest editorial firom Dixon Evening Telegraph). On Tuesday, Nov, 5,the voters of this section of Illinois will | go to the polls to vote for a man to represent lliem as Secretary i of State* The people have an opportunity to vote for a namethat has been illustrious in past Illinois political history.: Donald Carpentier is seeking the office held by his father, the late Charles F. Carpentier -- the honorable and dedicatee and beloved grand man oftheRepublicanparty who held the office of Secretary of State for three terms. •• • Senator Carpentier is serving his second term as Stater Senator from the district that composes the counties of Rock Is-; land, Mercer and Henderson. He has been active in Republican politics and was former President of the Young Republican Club of Rock Island county. He is the successful operator of the Carpentier Insurance Agency in Moline and a member of theboard of directors of the Community Savings and Loan association of Moline. _ ... In the Senate lie is chairman of the important Committee on Highways and Traffic Relations. He is cd-chairman of the U" linois Space Commission and member of the Senate Committee on Elections, Financial Institutions, Banks, Savings and Loans, Public Utilities and Railroads* • Senator Don Carpentier is honest, capable, sincere and humble. We feel he has the qualifications to carry out the will of the people when elected to this important state office. We know that Don Carpentier will carry on the fine name of his father with honor. ! ° The Dixon Evening Telegraph is proud to endorse Senator Donald Carpentier for the officer of Secretary of Stated Ogilvie For Governor The polls show Richard Ogilvie to be way ahead in the race for Governor. The great thing in Ogilvie's race is his fearless way of meeting the issues head on. Dick Ogilvie, instead of spending his speaking hours running down his opponents, spends his time telling the people of Illinois what he will do after he is elected Governor. The opponents of Mr. Ogilvie are spending their time trying to make an issue of something that just isn't true. Dick Ogilvie hired a man named Richard Cain way back when Ogilvie was sheriff. Ogilvie fired Cain, one of his chief investigators when it was discovered Cain was doing wrong. Richard Ogilvie fired him. K is just as simple as that. , ) £ . What the Democrats are ttfraid to say aia fail to'say is "• that Richard Cain was one of the top valued employees of the Democratic controlled Chicago Police department when he was recommended to Ogilvie for a job as Chief Investigator. Richard Cain was recommended to Ogilvie for the job by five most prominent Chicago citizens whose reputations are of the highest - one a newspaper man, one a prominent State Street store merchant. Now let's go from the ridiculous to the sublime and mention some minor characters employed by prominent Democrats such as Bobby Baker, Mr. Jenkins, Assistant to President Johnson for some 20 years arrested twice on morals charges, and Billy Sol Estes of Texas fame. These influential lads have yet to see the inside of a jail. Democrats fail to mention these men. We think the people are fed up with so much of this political baloney and hokkum and are listening to the straightforward candidates who are telling the people what their plans are to be after they are elected. Democrats in the State Legislature voted against eleraon reform laws and the Democratic Governor vetoed the bill. Any Democratic Governor who is in Mayor Daley's hip pocket should not be elected. We feel the voters of Illinois will go along with Richard Ogilvie's wishes to reform our election laws, our crime laws and to do his utmost to avoid a state income tax - to name a few things. This newspaper wholeheartedly endorses and supports Richard B. Ogilvie for Governor of this great State of Illinois. MCCLORY VISIT Congressman Robert Mc- Clory, candidate for re-election in Illinois 12th Congressional district, visited with supporters and local Republican party campaign workers at Wonder Lake Sunday, Oct. 27 The gathering hosted by Mrs. Gerri Ernst and Mrs. Betty Belshaw was well attended. Jack Schaffer, Republican candidate for County Auditor, Theron Ehorn, candidate for re-election to the County Coroner post, and A1 Jour dan, chairman, Mc- Henry Republican Central committee, were among the honored guests. Congressman McClory used the occasion topresent some informal remarks.\He began by saying, "the Repi paign is now in national, state and local level." The ultimate goal, he said, "is to achieve peak popularity on Nov. 5". Congressman McClory lauded Republican Presidential Candidate Richard M. Nixon by saying, "Mr. Nixon's forthright approach to domestic and international problems has served to consolidate support from all factions within the party. His common sense solutions to the major issues confronting us today have given hope to a strife-torn America*'. McClory contiiiiied toy statlhg, •'according to recent polls Nixon should gather a large plurp ality on Nov. 5", and that "a Nixon landslide would unite the country behind new and competent leadership". McClory stated, however, that "complacency has no place in this final week before election day. All efforts should be redoubled to insure a Republican victory." „ Rep. McClory also remarked on the 'Wallace Threat' saying that " recent polls have shown a defection from the Wallace ranks and a return to Republican and Democratic party affiliations." "I think", he said, "that people are realizing that* the two-party system is still the ; valid concept of American de-' mocracy." The Congressman concluded! by saying, "the Republican party offers the only positive alternative to the 'Status Quo':* Following Rep. McClory'r remarks, Mrs. Wilk, Mrs;1 Swearingen and Mrs. Gauth-" reaux served refreshments provided by the 12th Congres-- sional District Republican Women's club.
