PLAINDEALER PHOTO Tribute To Judge Mrs. A1 Jour dan, left, and her husband, right, McHenry county central committeeman, extend support to Judge Glenn Seidenfeld and Mrs. Seidenfeld at a gathering held in the county last Sunday. Over 200 McHenry county citizens gathered at the , new Crystal Lake Country club last Sunday to pay tribute to Judge and Mrs. Glenn K. Seidenfeld. Judge Seidenfeld is a candidate for retention as Circuit Judge of the 19th Judicial Circuit (Lake and McHenry counties) in the Nov. 5 elections. Judges William M. Carroll and Charles S. Parker of Woodstock attended along with many other McHenry county dignitaries. Among them were candidates for re-election, including Margaret CNeil, for Circuit Clerk, Harry C. Herendeen for Recorder of Deeds and Theron J. Ehorn for Coroner. Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Sharp represented Jack Schaffer, the Republican candidate for Auditor and Mrs. Henry Cowlin represented William Cowlin Republican candidate for State's Attorney. State Rep. Daniel Pierce, unopposed Democrat candidate for re-election to the Illinois General Assembly, was also present. State Rep. George W. Lindberg, Republican from Crystal Lake, had the honor of introducing Judge Seidenfeld at the reception. Under the Illinois Constitution judges, once elected under partisan labels, must thereafter come before the electorate every six years for retention in office. Nonetheless, Judge Seidenfeld has the endorsement of both political parties in the county. Harold McKenney, the chairman of the Democratic Central committee, and A1 Jour dan, - chairman of the Republican Central committee, attended the reception and affirmed their support for Judge Glenn K. Seidenfeld. In his remarks, Judge Seidenfeld expressed his deep appreciation for the fine reception he has had in McHenry county. He reminded everyone of the importance of taking the time on election day to vote the Judicial Retention ballot even though it is a paper ballot in contrast to the method of selecting national, state and county officials using the Votamatic system. He reminded the audience that the selection of judicial officers is no less important than the other elective positions. The reception was sponsored by the McHenry County Lawyers Committee supporting Judge Glenn K. Seidenfeld and the chairman of the event was Mr. James C. Franz. BOND ISSUE SUPPORT "The need for the billion dollar bond issue is simply tremendous^ Few Illinois citizens realize the tremendous requirements that MUST be met now if we are to have pure water and protect our own health. * "For the county of McHenry, the estimate for sewers and water through 1980 is in the vicinity of some 40 million dollars. For the entire state estimates are two billion seven hundred million for sewage disposal and treatment; one billion for water treatment; and five hundred million for water related conservation. "The federal government, along with the state, has now established water standards that must be met. We already know well engineering projects on the books at the present time for our own counties and municipal governments -- these are no dream, they represent actual needs. "If the bond issue foils, the same enforcement will be in effect, and the money to construct these projects will come f'v from property taxes -- we cannot afford this route. "The entire state will benefit. Projects will be approved by an impartial technical board and further approved by the Legislature. There is hoblacnk check to anyone. The money will conie from the state budget and will generate federal grants in the vicinity of some 700 million. "Better yet, the billion dollar bond issue is kept at the localstate level rather than ton. i Washing- "Rep. John Henry Kleine "Northern Illinois Water Resources Commission & co-chairman, Illinois Water Pollution and Water Resources Commission". "To the Editor: "What does someone from Southern Illinois have to gain from the defeat of the proposed constitutional convention? "Could it be that the Mr. Meyer from Breese, Illinois, (his name was listed as sponsor in Wednesday's ad) fears that Northern Illinois might finally end up with its fair share of the state taxes we pay? "Certainly his real reason for opposition is not listed in the ad. He suggests con-con might take away home rule from local government. As any informed city official, or lawyer can tell you, home rule cannot exist in Illinois under the present constitution. In fact, the state legislature could abolish any city or village in Illinois if it wanted to. That's not home rule. "The gentleman from Southern Illinois also suggests that con - con will bring a state income tax. If you have listened closely in this campaign, you will remember that neither 5 candidate for governor has promised that an income tax will hot be enacted within the next four years. Since constitutional revisions from con-con would not take effect for about four years, it seems safe to assume that constitutional authority for an income tax exists right now. "This means voting "no" on con-con won't stop an income tax. (Talking to your state representatives and senators might , on the other hand.) "Another objection brought up is the cost. Anything govern* , ment does costs money. A constitutional convention is estimated to cost from 50 cents to $1 per person. The benefit#, of course, shouldbe much greater. . / v "Finally, Mr. Meyers allegesJ that pressure groups are behind the con - con idea, but he refuses to identify just what his special interest group is after; "People like the Better Government Association, the Taxpayers Federation of Illinois, the League of Women. Voters the Illinois Jaycees, virtually p; every educational association <|>/ AND the Republican and Demo- m cratic parties siqaport con - . con. They want better govern- 11 ment in Illinois. | ) , "A vote for con - con could |* bring better local and state | 4 government at a reasonable cost. A vote against con - con ^ (or failure to vote on the blue paper ballot) means no chance ^ for major improvement in II- >; linois government in the ne*r ; future. • ' '< ' ; •-=: "The choice is yours. ;• "Sincerely, "Cal Skinner, Jr. , "McHenry Cbunty Treasu- • rer" ILLINOIS - THE TA^L STATE Illinois . . .the Tall State . . .is a capsule of America-- a concentration of all elements thtft make the American economic system strong.
