Women Give Low* While there are ho authenticated cases of families running their automatic washers and dryers continuously, some homemakers feel this is very nearly the case at their Jiouses. A survey conducted for U. S. Steel with 2,006 housewives reveals that one-fourth of the. women interviewed do ten or more loads of laundry each week. One-fourth wash six or seven days a week, and twothirds launder three or more days a week. The survey was of the national area-probability type. This makes its findings representative of the whole country. In the hour-long personal interviews in the respondents' homes, detailed information was sought on the women's attitudes -toward home laundry appliances and what they want in the future. „ . High SalisfactionRute Their present washers and: dryers satisfy 95 per cent of > the homemakers, with 53 per , cent ratine them superior or above average. No service calls in the past year^were reported by 70 per cent of the women. This finding bears out indusr . try statistics which show that service calls have declined two-thirds in seven years. Increased reliability and im- Good Water Heater a Washday Must About the only thing that hasn't changed since great grandma did the family wash is the dependence on plenty of hot water. Grandma did the laundry with a scrubboard and clothes boiler, while granddaughter does it with an automatic washer and an automatic water heater. Since an automatic washer uses 25 to 40 gallons of heated water per load, its efficacy depends on an efficient water heater. Altogether more than 150 home uses of hot water have been counted. These add up to 100 to 130 gallons of heated water a day for a family of four. We are so dependent on hot water that 8 out of 10 times that water is used in the home, it is heated water. Important demands for hot water include: dishwasher, 5 to 10 gallons per load; tub bath, 10 to 15 gallons; shower bath, 3 gallons per minute; house cleaning, 5 to 12 gallons; food preparation, 6 gallons. The only time we are conscious of a water heater is when it runs out of hot water. When it starts doing that, it's time to consider a new one. You will need a water heater at least one \size l2ttgesr;thaa yaurprea- CONTINUOUS automatic washer operation is possible with Bryant high-volume water heater. ent one. It is always wise to prepare for the future and buy a heater with more capacity than you require at the moment. Two factors determine the capability of a water heater. One, of course, is the size of the tank and the other is the speed with which the heater can re-' place the hot water once you start using it. Water heaters are getting to be more sophisticated appliances. Most are equipped with thermostats that can be set up for washing clothes, for instance, and then set back for normal use. Some water heaters can deliver two temperatures. A direct line to appliances delivers the hottest water. A valve is used to mix hot and cold water for baths. proved deslgn ein^rged as the most highly valued attributes of washers and dryers. Women In the survey had definite ideas for future improvements. These include remote controls in the kitchen for appliances in the basement ... a built-in unit that would store and dispense washday aids . . . an automatic timer that would start the washer or dryer at a pre-set time. Another ingenious suggestion was for an appliance that would offer a choice of washing or dry cleaning the clothes. Women in the survey were asked to vote for features they considered essential: Washer Features Essential Water-temperature control Lint remover • ': > .Water-level selector 50% Unbalanced-load shutoff 49% Rinse-temperature control- 48% Type-of-fabric selector 43% Choice of wash speeds 43% Cold-water wash 40% D^er Features Essential Time control 87% Lint catcher x 81% Temperature control 76% Type-of-fabric selector 48% Cold-air tumble 36% HOTPOINT UNVEILS MAJOR INNOVATION IN HOMELAUNDRY EQUIPMENT Hotpoint unveiled a new concept in home laundry appliances which promises to have as great an impact on the homemaker's way of washing clothes as did the advent of the automatic washer more than a generation ago. As different from today's washing machines as the first automatic was from the now almost forgotten wringer - washer, Hotpoint's Duo-Load double-tub machine does two completely different kinds of ioadsat tte«mettmejS^E« ately and automatically/ If you were hanging w$t clothes outdoors in Minneapolis-- with the temperature 3Cr and the wind blowing 5 miles per hour -- or doing the same thing in Jacksonville -- with the temperature 50° and the wind blowing 35 miles per hour; -- in which place would your hands feel colder?. According to a government wind-chill chart, you would feel just as cold hi Jacksonville as in Minneapolis.. The equivalent temperature with the wind calm in each city would be 27°. In either case, of course, you'd feel much better if you dried your clothes the civilized way --in an automatic clothes dryer. Not only would your hands stay warm and unchap- £ed, but you'd be saved tne auling and hanging of wet clothes, the fading and whipping in the sun and wind, as well as all the other misfortunes that can befall clothes hanging outdoors -- ranging from soot, to birds, to rain, to small boys. A sampling of readings from the wind-chill chart gives you an idea of how cold you'll really feel while hanging out the clothes at various wind and temperature combinations: Thermometer Wind You Feel Reading Speed This Cold 50° 50° 40° 40° 30° 30° 30MPH 40MPH 20MPH 30MPH 10MPH 20MPH 28° 26° 18° 13° 16° 4° The moral is: join the smart set and get an automatic dryer. Then no matter how cold and windy it gets out, you'll stay snug and warm. • -H otpoint I688888BSI with speeial settings for PERMANENT-PRESS Hotpoint DRYESf ** * $119 M |yiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiijiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiy| H i B up B--n I GUARANTEE of 1 ] SATISFACTION ] = .,.IN ADDITION TO STANDARD PRODUCT WARRANTIES S = If you are not completely satisfied with the perform- = = ance of your new Hotpoint appliance and notify us = = within 90 days of the date of purchase, we will replace 5 H it with atomparable Hotpoint model at no cost to you. §| = exclusive of disconnection or reconnection costs.
