:-xj. FOR WOMEN ONLY; Button, Button! Why Use Buttons? t#-; 0 ByFRAN SHERIFF The number of buttons and dial settings on modern automatic washers and dryers reflects the complex blends and types of fabrics that people use in modern life. The purpose of the controls is to make modern home laundering easy to do with perfect results time after time. Mastering the buttons and dials is as easy to learn as tuning a television set. In the past, when cotton and linen fabrics were used almost exclusively, strong soap, hot Fiw snota water, and some kind of agitation or scrubbing was all that was necessary to get clothing clean. That colors faded quickly and ironing piled high were considered normal results of getting the clothing clean. Not today. Many modern fabrics have become great favorites because of their crisp appearance without ironing; for best performance, these fabrics require the special washing and drying cycles of a fully automatic machine. Washed and dried in automatic machines, cottons and linens remain strong and bright-colored much longer, require less ironing, over-all. Family clothing budgets decrease in direct ratio to how fast soiled clothing can be run through the washer/dryer cycles and be ready to wear again. There are fewer ill-fitting, faded hand-me-downs in the family wardrobe. Washday can be any day, at any time, regardless of weather. Basic, Advanced, Top There are washers and dryers cycled to perform properly for almost any washable fabric. For general descriptive gurposes the machines might e categorized as: basic models, advanced models and top /*% -"V ELEVATED CONTROL PANELS with built-in storage compartments below are featured by Frigidaire automatic washer and dryer with solid-state controls that offer maximum flexibility. Basic machines have little flexibility, but decision-making is minimal: One button to start or fill, a button or dial to / models (including the socalled "programmed" washer). Cycles are what control the washer or dryer once it is set. This term describes the automatic sequence -- washing, rinsing and spin-drying. Basic models offer one cycle, one water level, one speed for wash, rinse and spin, one rinse temperature and two wash temperatures -- hot or warm. Although basic models perform very satisfactorily for badly soiled and wash-andiron fabrics, they spin too fast, causing excessive wear in delicate fabrics, or wrinkling in permanent press. They do not have the cool-down cycles so necessary for successful noiron laundering of both washand- wear and permanentpress fabrics. select either warm or hot water, and perhaps a dial adjustment permitting some manual control of rinse or spin times. The matching dryer is one cycle, automatically performing the air, heat and tumbling actions once it is set. It has only two temperatures -- high and low. It may be operated on air only, to fluff pillows or to "breeze" away smoke or other undesirable odors. Timing is manual because the basic model does not include electronic sensing devices or a timer-thermostat. Advanced models offer considerably more flexibility in cycling: permanent press or wash-ana-wear, woolens and delicate things. In addition to a regular wash cycle. Water levels may be adjusted to full, medium, or low, allowing you to adjust for the level required for the load. Being able to adjust water levels may be important for water conservation or to reduce the amount of water entering a septic system. Other Savings Of course, there are savings in detergents, bleach and fabric conditioners, too. Two wash and rinse speeds -- fast and medium -- provide the fast speed needed to remove heavy soil from sturdy fabrics and a medium speed for everything but woolens and hand-washable fabrics. Three wash temperatures -- hot, warm, cold -- offer selectivity for fabrics that get really dirty and a warm or cold setting which will not set creases into synthetic fabrics in the spinning process. Rinse temperatures -- either warm or cold -- must be reset manually if different from the wash temperature. Two spin speeds -- fast and medium -- Ijermit fast spinning for heavy oads and a slower speed for better results with wash-andwear and permanent press. Even with greater flexibility, the advanced models are not too complicated to set: Fabric setting, water level, wash and rinse speed, water temperature, spin speed. Most advanced dryers have two cycles --regular and wash-and-wear; three temperatures -- high, low, wash-and-wear, plus air only. Timing is automatic, determined by the cycle setting; electronic or automatic dryness controls are available on many models. Timing may also be controlled manually. This can speed up the air-only fluffing of shag rugs, bed spreads or draperies, or let you finish quickly the hard-to-dry pieces in a mixed load. Washing "Recipe" With fully automatic top model equipment you ran mix any washing "recipe" for any fabric type. You can operate p,- on full automaticity by select- £ ing the proper button or dial to set water level, wash and rinse times, temperatures, and r {f speeds needed for the fabric apei . tiie being washed, or elect to use a variety of manual adjust-. ments more suitable to the load requirements. Features added, as com-' pared with advanced performance, include a slow setting for wash and rinse speeds, extremely important for best results m laundering woolens and hand washables. Two additional spin speeds -- extra fast (good for woolens and heavy loads) and slow -- just right to prevent creasing in wash-and-wear and permanent press -- add to the flexl-\ bility of the fully automatic washer. Some top dryers have as many as seven temperature settings. They will perform such handy jobs as sprinkling dry clothes, or shut off on the damp-dry setting when the moisture content of the clothes reaches 18 per cent, considered ideal for ironing. If you don't want or need the flexibility of full automaticity combined with optional manual controls, the "programmed" washer may be the ideal laundry-mate for your fully automatic dryer. It's the fabric revolution -- the new fabrics, the blends, and new finishes on old, familiar fabrics that make washday decisions seem pretty complex. Buttons and dials actually help eliminate howto- wash worries with automatic decision-making. These small miracles of an electronic age are labor-savi ing devices, and not at all formidable, once you understand the game of button, button -- which button to use. ALL THE DIFFERENCE Wash-and-wear is made from fabric that is processed flat, before being cut and sewn. Permanent press gets its shape-setting finish after the item is made, but only tumble drying makes it no ironing. SUi --n»fr-rrre^ \ \ % Wlitlwr Medal WCON-2 agitate ipMdi. 2 spin speeds. 7 cycles.
