f"|p.***** : »±CA$EY ' rests following me VIETNAM SERVICE ••_:>•.- <: • .:' _ : f a : • a H V ~ : ' I*. Maurice M. Casey of 401 j, Country Club drive, McHena member of the U.S. Marine Corps stationed in Vietnam, called recently to tell his family that he was enjoying a week of rest at Sidney, Australia, after active service since Dec. 5 of last year in the battletorn demilitarized zone. Lt.' Casey and his platoon received their "baptism of flre" as they arrived by helicopter at idie Sanh last Jan. 21. Some of his men were wounded by enemy fire before they reached the ground and had to be evacuated at the first opportunity. In letters home, the Marine lieutenant said that in order of importance, his men's morale was dependent on I, ammunition; II, mail; and in, food. While he was at Khe Sanh, "C" rations were dropped by parachute and mail often was delayed for fifteen days before it was delivered. Casey said young Marines needed extra encouragement by their officers to keep up their spirits. He received his B.S. degree from Northern Illinois university, DeKalb, 111. Casey taught for four years at Edgebrook school before enlisting in the Marines May 14, 1966. His brother, Robert, and two sisters, Madonna and Alicia, all teach school. Lt. Casey said an amusing angle in connection with his platoon concerns efforts by police of SanDiego, Calif., to get one of his men to pay a fine for jay-walking in that city. The fine originally was $5 but delay in payment has raised the sum to $30. The Marine, Pvt. Henry PHiel has r received, ;tbr£at^hg inters : from the police despite the fact that his platoon leader, Lt. Casey, has written a letter saying his pay records are lost, that he hasn't been paid, and therefore is unable to pay the fine at this time. Pvt. Phiel wants the San Diego police department to come to Vietnam and get him. "There's nothing Pd like better than for the long arm of the law to reach out and snatch me from this beleagured outpost," he is quoted. Casey said the men of his platoon have written a poem they call The Fighters We fought for freedom while over here. So that our country would have no fear. But while we fought through mud and dust, The people back home didn't care about us. They carried signs like "Ban the bomb", And "Don't send us to Vietnam". At first it didn't bother me none, But Pve seen my buddies die one by one. Now Pm still fighting, but just to live, My life for them Pll never give. M|y friends and family I wish well, But all those others can go to H--. Lt. Casey will receive the presidential unit citation for his participating in holding the strategic Khe Sanh for ninetytwo, days from North Viet Cong. His unit also has been recommended for the "Navy unit cita-* tiori U.U.C. and Meritorious Unit Citation, MUC. He ejects to complete his Vietnam tour in early January. •. IMPORTANCE OF PREMATURE BABY CENTOt EVIDENT Value of a premature center serving hospitals in the northern Illinois area was dramatized again last Week when a baby borp at McHenry hospital was transferred by helicopter to St. Fr^icis hospital, Peoria. To help provide intensive nursing and medical care for perhaps j60 days or more, the state has establishedthree centers for premature babies, Dr. Peter Griesbach explained. Dr. Griesbach stated McHenry hospital has the facilities and trained staff to care for premature babies when they are born. Because of the infre~ quency of this type of birth; the hospital does not have th@ staff for long-time .premature care. Babies are not transferred until it is safe for them to travel. Wlien transferred, they are carried in an incubator with facilities for oxygen. A registered nurse accompanies each infant. . McHenry hospital has obtained permission for a heliport on land adjacent to an athletic field at McHenry's high school's east campus. When a helicopter is to arrive, both high school officials and the police department are informed, Dr. Griesbach said. "The state recommends use 't U ' k f 't ^ : FRI., NOV., 8, 1968 - PLAIN DEALER - PG. 9 f of the special facilities at Peoria for several reasons", Dr. Griesbach observed. "It requires one nurse to care for every two premature babies, and these hospitals are staffed r in this manner. Medical and hospital care over a lengthy period is costly, a burden some families cannot handle, so the state is prepared to assist in helping meet the cost forthose persons who require!?} The heliport speeds parents on their way *hey iboiild be taken by autp.The.auto drive to Peoria is about tour hours while the helicopter trip ' can be completed in 90 minutes. "If additional intensive nursing care is needed, personnel is present at St. Francis* where the registered nurses with the nursing school at the hospital are. available." .
