I REMEMBER BY THE OLD TIMER From Velma E. Burden, Lancaster, Calif.: I remember when our American flag was something sacred and saluted by all. I remember when our schools were not patroled by narcotic officers and riot control police. I remember when parents took their children to Sunday school and church. I remember when adults entered the room, the children would stand up. I remember when it was safe for a couple to take an evening stroll in their own neighborhood. I remember when our policemen were respected and obeyed. Will our grandchildren have any pleasant memories of their early years? • * * From Alfaretta Courtright, Alvin, Texas: I remember when we used coal oil lamps. We filled them with oil and trimmed the wicks and shined the chimneys each day. Nearly every week coal oil was on the grocery list. If we lost the cap off the coal oil can spout, the grocer put a potato on the spout I remember my father told me that when his family moved to Kansas they packed provisions in a wagon. The coal oil got too near the flour and he added, "My sisters made the Srettiest biscuits out of that our and they just lasted and lasted." A big victory was Walsh achieved against Carmel last weekend, 20-19 as Marian three limes came fjcom behind to match Carmel touchdowns. Twice Tom Clark kicked extra points while Carmel achieved only one kick in three attempts --one was blocked. Holy Cross, 14-6 victim of Notre Dame of Niles lastweek- Had a long letter from Jim Jones which we will give you at least in parts: Dear Mr. Walsh, You probably don't remember me because I haven't been around McHenry much since the summer of 1963 when my wife, Hildie, and I came to California to "seek my fortune". Your son, Jack, and Pat knew me a little better as I graduated in 1959 from MCHS. Anyway, we keep ties with home through letters with friends and relatives - and through our subscription to the Plaindealer. Pve enjoyed ydur column immensly and suffered with you (and at least a few others) as our beloved White Sox struggled through their dismal season. My only consolation has been that I am 2100 safe miles from the gleeful barbs of the diehard Cub fans. 1 kept a sympathetic silence while you bore the brunt of their attacks. I am going to break my silence long enough to send you the front page of the "Sacramento Bee" Sports Section. •(Please pardon the chile sauce in the upper left hand corner; I had to salvage it from the gabage can). I thought the column headed "Between the Sports Line" by Marco Smolich might be of interest to you. It shows that you and I (plus at least a few others) weren't the only ones who were :: ;let down. And the author of the ^ column was supposedly being .objective (unless of course.he Pis another displaced Sox fan). Ah, well - Wait 'til --7? Say hello to your family from us. if any of you are ever out here, don't hesitate to lode us : 19. rd like to show Jack some great hunting and fishing. Say hello to Adele also. Fve followed her fights against short - sightedness and 'progress' (e. g. for the bond issue, against the condemnation of homes along Waukegan road, and the demise of Conwy's Woods). Although, like the Sox, she seems to have lost more than she has won, I wish her luck. NOVEMBER 19 League of Women Voters of. OBSERVE ART WEEK Mrs, Laverne Spohr, president of McHenry Woman's club announced that the first week in November has been designated American Art Week by the General Federation of Woman's clubs. A display of paintings and crafts by members will be held at the meeting, Nov. 8, at 1 pjn. at the Zion Lutheran church. Members are asked to bring their work early in order that it may be arranged for viewing. I HEAR Sport* Editors We will cut in here to say we are glad to know of another White Sox fan. It has been a tough season, iat we can "wait until next year". Yes, Our Brenda (Adele) has fought the good fight to preserve the things she believes in. At this point, she is still a winner. Of course, when you get into the loss of Cooney Woods to land development, it is a long story. Perhaps the death blow to those who wanted to preserve this and other areas was when the voters knocked down a park district referendum some years ago. As Charlie Weaver would say, Jim goes on to say: "I wonder how many hours Jack, the Powers brothers, Dick Antonson and coiuitless others (including myself) spent, constructively, I think, wandering through those woods. We could fish for chubs and shiners in the creek. We climbed to the top of the world in an abandoned silo. And we used to imagine that the ridge that ran through the woods (The hump") was an ancient Indian burial ground." Your mention of that old silo, Jim, set us to looking up a pictures which our photographer, Wayne Gaylord, took this year when our cross country team used the course in that area. We are printing it on the sports page just for yoii. . ' .Jim is darned unhappy about houses being built on his beloved^ tramping grounds, l»ut tt would take from now 'til next week to cover that subject. We are thankful that 50 acres are being preserved for a park. Other playground areas are also planned. We have enjoyed your letter, Jim, and wish you every success in your new surroundings. We note that you and Hildie went west. Now, you sign off with -- Sincerely, The Joneses Hildie, Mike, Anita, Jim, and ? We heard that California is growing. But Parker feels, his ball club enters this game "on even terms" because of its steady improvement and the return at action of some of the injured' players. Though three regulars missed the Carmel game with injuries, Rick Jakubowske say key action after a layoff because of an injury. Randy Jackson may make it back to bolster the line for this finale, • ' • SENIOR UST Seniors who conclude their football careers include John Donahue, Tom Clark, Mark Riedl, Bill Faffer, Kent Cconey, Rich Saunders, Mike Corcoran, Burke Romkowske, Chuck Leucht, Scott Bourbon and Marty Adelphis. Feffer is out with an injury received early in the season. The squad escaped further injury in the hard-earned victory against a team Parker describes as possessing "a total offense". Carmel has good running, given an added danger with reverses and cutbacks. Us passing is wily, too, and Carn&l^uses its weapons in imaginatlve, daring manner. The game had many heroes, among them the seniors who performed in a maimer becoming a determined ball club. Leucht was a standout on offense as usual, and he also made some key plays on defense during Carmel's pass throwing efforts to salvage victory. Clark, who gained 68 yards from passes and 26 yards rushing, made a key interception late in the game with a desperate effort to overtake the receiver when both were battling • for a long throw. DOUBLE SLOT OFFENSE Romkowske, one of the middle men on the defensive line was a standout, Pan Lambert, the junior quarterback, threw -11 passes the first quarter -- and didn't call a running play as the Hurricanes surprised with a double slot offense. Lambert showed poise and • ^kill as he completed 19 out Of 34 passes for 249 yards. The Harriett?# added new dimension to their attack also by throwing to six receivers. "'This made the double teaming, of Leucht, all - conference end prospect, less effective. Chuck caught 6 passes for 102 yards, including a first quarter play that netted 56 yards and a touchdown.
