Actually, it may not seem like much of a job at all -- until you consider nearly four million miles of paved roadway in the United States contains at least a single centerline stripe. erous job, particularly on highspeed highways. Consider that striping is US* ually done without closing a , roadway. True, ifsdone by machine, but the machine is operated by human beings. The machine travels 10 mph or slower while adjacent traffic may be whizzing along at 70 mph or even faster. Would you dare drive your car 10 mph on a highspeed expressway? Most striping machines are manned by three men. One drives, another operates the painting machinery and a third drops traffic cones to protect newlypainted lines. All three must serve as lookouts for oncom-> ing traffic. Indicative of the dangers these crews face are these . comments from an employee of the Kansas City highway department, who had just finished a day's work painting stripes on one or the city's expressways: "They ( other drivers) always attack from the rear. They come so close they sometimes break the mirrors on the side of the trucks. "We had six Kansas City police officers out there with us one day. By noon, they said we were crazy to work under such ^conditions. They looked about done in, so we told them to |go home -- we'd manage", j And then there are drivers |who seem intent on ruining the psunt job. Ignoring cones laid by the crews, they cut from one lan? to another, smearing fresh paint as they go. Their dirty work may soon be over, however. One manufacturer reports development of a new instant - dry ( 10 seconds) reflective striping material for roadways, which makes traffic cones and barriers unnecessary. This 10-second drying time compares with a drying time of from three to 300 minutes for most conventional pavement - marking paints. And the new material is reported to show extremely bright in a car's headlights -- an obvious safety aid for night driving. But the danger to the highway workers is still there. You can help by approaching and passing their machinery at a careful STATE ACTS ON LICENSE OF AREA DRIVERS The office of Secretary of State Paul Powell has announced the suspension of the driver licenses of Joseph Gonzalia of Union, Judith L.
