The average (one-pack-per-day) ci-v garette addict dies from 5 to 7 years earlier thanthe non-smoker. But tension, obesity, and chain smoking can knock 25 years off your lifespan. So learn how to favor your heart and lower your pusle rale! By - George W. Crane, Ph. D., M.D. CASE H- 543: Marilyn R., aged 19, is a college coed. "Dr. Crane*', she began, "Daddy died of a heart attack a month ago. "But he was only 46 years old! "And he seemed in perfect health until that very day when it occurred. "So what could have caused such an early death?" HEART ATTACKS Heart and blood vessel damage ( apoplexy) cause 1,000,- 000 deaths eachyearintheU.S.- A. Yet all types of cancer, combined, kill only 300,000 annually! At birth, God Almighty figuratively places 2% billion heart beats in our "cardiac bank account". If we lead a temperate life, free from unnecessary tensions, anxieties, stimulants and obesity, they should last us to the age of 80 years. But if we race the motor so to speak, and use them faster, we may died at 46, like Marilyn's daddy. To help your heart and thus hoard those 2V2 billion heart beats wisely, sit down when you work, if possible. And while reading or viewing TV, keep your feetonahassockl For when you stand, your heart must pump your blood maybe 6 feet in the vertical and this will require possibly 2 or 3 beats more per minute. When you sit in a chair, your; 6- foot height drops to about 4% feet. But with feet on a hassock ( or desk or windowsill), it is only 3 feet. The least strain on the hear$ your pulse rate as much as 20 beats per minute. And this acceleration may last for 20 minutes after you have finished your cigarette! V Tobacco addicts also tend to have hardening of the artery walls, with a reduction in their diameter. This requires more pressure and a faster pulse rate, so your normal blood pressure of possible 120/75 may zoom to 200/ 95. " , With this almost doubling of pressure, it is obvious why strokes of apoplexy occur, for an auto tire with double its proper air pressure may blow out when you hit a bump. Drugs and even sleeping pills can likewise wear out your heart prematurely, for they must be destroyed in the liver and excreted via the kidneys, but the heart must meet this extra prodding. Caffeine products, such as tea and coffee, as well as the cola drinks, also speed up your heart. So does lack of salt via excessive sweating. And worry, Apprehension, fear, anger or other emotions will exhaust those 2% billions heart beats ahead of schedule. So send for m^,booklet "How to Break the Tobacco and Liquor Habits" enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, pfus 20 cents. (Always write to Dr. Crane in care of this newspaper, enclosing a long stamped, addressed envelope and 20 cents to cover typing and printing costs when you send for one of his booklets). i TROOP 131 We had a good turn-out this last Monday with seventeen Scouts and eleven Webelos in attendance. By the way, these Webelos are an active bunch of boys and we are looking forward to the day when t hey will become Boy Scouts. A special welcome was also given to Danny Lennon and Jim Chesler who officially joined our troop. As promised, we had a board of review consisting of Committeemen Bob French, Jack Patzke, Don McCracken and Bill Walter. Two boys, Gary Reinwall and Kurt Kreimier, were reviewed and passed on the requirements for first class. Congratulations on a job well done. We will also have a board of review next Monday for those of you who will complete your requirements this week. Plans call for a Court of Honor on Dec. 16 so this will probably be the last board Of review before this event. Remember the pancake dinner will be held Dec. 7 so let's get those tickets sold and money turned in as soon as possible.
