Hie greatest problem feeing the 1969 Illinois General Assembly will be finding the revenue to meet demands for state spending. This was the general concensus of the six McHenry counly area legislators who attended a legislative review dinner Tuesday night at the Crystal Lake high school. More than one hundred persons paid $3 each to take part in the discussion of possible upcoming, legislation. On hand were State Senators Karl Berning of Deerfield, from the 32nd district; and Dennis Collins of DeKalb, from the 33rd district, and four state representatives. They were John Henry Kleine of Lake Forest, George Lindberg of Crystal Lake and Daniel Pierce of Highland Park, all representing the 32nd district, and Lester Cunningham of Belvidere, from the 33rd district. Rep. Hiomas Hanahan of McHenry was unable to attend because of a death in the family. The discussion was moderated by McHenry County Treasurer Cal Skinner. MANY PRESSURES Rep. Kleine said the spending pressure will come in the areas of roads, education, welfare and pollution control, and that the present tax situation is in serious shape. Rep. Lindberg complained thht although the legislature has been spending more money for services being demanded by the public, it does not appear that they are getting their money's worth. Lindberg said he would introduce several bills in the legislature, includingone which would permit physicians to treat minors affected with veneral disease without parental consent, and another calling for a study of what he said we're . . . the problems of Excessive urbanization. " Senator Cdllins foresaw the' four, main issues facing the legislature as revenue, election reform, the need for a restriction of state government, and establishing tin mechanics for a state constitutional convention. He also asked those: attpp<ffng if they were really interested in reducing expend!-' tures. Senator Collins said the revenue problem will b® the most acute in years and pre-* dieted a possible deficit of two - hundreu-fifty - milliondollars. But he expressed coil*; fidence that incoming Governor Richard Ogilvie will be able to hold down spending. PREDICTS RECORD BUDGET But Rep. Pierce, the only Democrat present, predicted that despite Republican talk of economy, Illinois will have the highest budget in its history next year. Pierce said that the state legislature must meet the needs of Illinois citizens or face ftirther encroachment of the federal government in the lives of its people,, He said the only way to raise the needed money is a state income tax, and predicted that Ogilvie will be forced eventually to recommend one. Skinner , led a discussion of seventy-four legislative proposals submitted by various group and individuals. They ranged from lowering the drinking and voting age to 18 to a requirement that a person have a personal property tax receipt to get his or her auto license plates. The dinner was sponsored by the Crystal Lake area American Legion, the American Association of University Women, the Business and Professional Women's club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Government Improvement League, the Mwanis club and the League of Women Voters. ______ H to $500 to $1,000 to your present salary You can do it without getting a raise or seeking a better job. Suppose you are making $10,000 a year and approximately one-fourth (which is the national average) is tied up in installment payments. If you are paying only 20 per cent for the use of this money (which is a modest figure), this means that it is costing you $500 just for interest and carrying charges. If you earn $20,000, the amount doubles to $1,000. You can add this money to your current income by building up savings so that the money is in hand when the time comes to buy. This is really the smart way to do things.
