How can I clean some of my decorative candles, which have become rather soiled and dingy-looking? A. Wipe off with a soft cloth dipped in kerosene and then wrung o it. Do this quickly with a smooth up-and-down motion. Then, with the same motion, reharden the wax with a cloth dipped in cold water. The original luster can be restored just by rubbing the candles briskly a few times with a crumpled sheet of tissue paper. Q. How can I prevent my skillets, waffle irons, and griddles from/sticking? A. Wash them out and, after drying, sprinkle some salt into them and put irjto a warm oven. After heating, dust out the salt and return the utensils to their shelves. The next foods cooked in them will come out easily. Q. How can I make a quicker job of defrosting frozen foods? . A. Try standing them in front of-an electric fan. Q. How can I remedy a hat veil that seems to have lost its crisp, new appearance? A. You can usually give it a new lease on life by pressing it over a sheet of Waxed paper. Use a moderately hot iron, as too m ich heat wil? evaporate the wax. Veils given this treatment will stay fresh surprisingly long, and the treatment can be repeated. Q. What can I do when my apple or cherry pies begin to boil over while baking? A. Take a half-slice of white bread and soak it in hot water for a minute. Then squeeze most of the, water out and press firmly on the juicy places. When the pie is done, remove thp slice of bread. Q. Do you have a tip for easier removal of old putty from a window sash prior to installing a new pane of glass? A. Try this one: Spread a thin film of rubber cement over the putty strip, then touch a match to it. Wh'jn the flames die out, the softened putty will come off like butter. Q. How can I remove the rust that has formed Dn soms iron railings outside our home? A. Remove the rust particles with emery paper or steel wool. Prime the iron with red-lead paint (12 parts red-lead paste, 10 parts linseed oil, one part turpentine, and one part dryer). After this has dried, apply your finish coat of paint over it. Q. How can I make for more painless removal of splinters from the skin? A. Pressman- ice cube on the spot for at least 30 seconds, then remove the splinter with a sterilized needle. The ice will numb the area. Q. How can I remove old bloodstains from some of my nice handkerchiefs? A. Two tablespoons of am monia added to a quart of water can be used for soaking these stains out of your hankies. Q. How cari I prevent some nuts"from rusting tight on bolts? A. Dip the threaded end of the bolt into shellac before turningthe nut onto it. The nut can then be removed later without a ay trouble. We often hear it said today that youth is setting the pace and that adults are falling into line. It is said that youth sets the fashions, in clothes, in music, in morals. This is not quite true. It is more likely that youth today is more outspoken, more ag ress i ve --and too many adults are too busy with too many other things to hold to the check reins and to provide proper guidance and counsel. This is not to say that to- 'dav's youth is all bad. Far from it. \'or does it mean that adults as a group don't give a hoot; Most of them do. The problem is that some of the lesser sins are committed in the name of freedom while too many voices remain stilled with apparent apathy. What we need is a rededication to the principles that made this nation great and, if you choose, a return to the belief that the deep, solid roots of a happy, full-time home life are essential to start young life on the road to true growth.
