t County Improvements Included In 69 State Road Building Program Gov. Samuel H. Shapiro has announced details of the state's 1969 road program -- the largest in Illinois' road building history. The 1969 Primary Highway Improvement program will provide for right-of-way acquisition and construction projects costing an estimated $348, 400,000. Of the total amount of $348, 400,000 estimated available for the 1969 program, $212,400,000 is earmarked for work on interstate highways and $136,000,000 for non-interstate highways. Right-of-way costs are expected to total about one-ninth of the program.* Of the $348,400,000 estimated available, the state will provide $99,000,000, local sources will provide $18,506,000, federal funds will provide $230,900,000 of which $191,200,000 must be used on interstate highways, and $39,700,000 on non-interstate highways. Among the non-interstate projects programs are included, in McHenry county, 111. 23, a bridge at Coon creek south of Northwest tollway, $95,000, and 111. 47, resurfacing of Wisconsin state line to Illinois i20 in Woodstock, $400,000. Right-of-way acquisitionprojects for future construction include, in the county, 111. 31, from State 176 to US 14 east of Crystal Lake, $60,000. In 1968, close to $200,000,000 in contract^ including those for right-of-way, were awarded. This was less than anticipated as the curtailment on the rate Of obligations of federal funds during 1968 prevented the placing of a number of federal raid projects under contract. Nine lettings were held during 1§68 at which 1,612 bids were received. This is an average of 2.7 bids per project on the 591 projects advertised. Eight lettings are j. scheduled for 1969, the first one in Springfield on January 24. Over 129 miles of new interstate highway were opened to traffic during the year. Other construction completed in 1968 included 41 miles of new pavement on other primary highways, 389 miles of bituminous concrete resurfacing and other work, 72 new bridges, and 123 new grade separation structures. ? BOV SCOUT » NEWS TROOP 162 Our boys are fortunate to have another civic-minded adult come io our meetings and volunteer his services as a leader. We are very happy to welcome Buck Goodman into our troop. Mr. Goodman and his wife, Shirley, moved here from Lebonon, Ohio, about 1% years ago. They are very thrilled with their new house on Main street thaMs 117 years old, one of the oldest in the county. Buck tells us the old recordings and deeds on the house make fascinating reading. A real lesson in McHenry history. TTie Goodman home also has an enclosed heated swimming pool that our Scouts. , will be able to take advantage I of. The Goodmans have three children, Kelly Sue, 7, little . Buck, 5, and Morris, 2. Mr. Goodman is a pilot and makes the third United pilot to join our council. Buck is a former Scout himself and enjoys working with boys. If there are any other men in town who do not happen to have boys in scouting but like working with boys this age, we'd appreciate your help. Call Bob Decker and he will find a big or little job for you depending on how much time you have. We can use men as merit badge counselors, for boards of review, weekly meetings, special projects, camp-outs or whatever your interests. Wife of our assistant scoutmaster, Mrs. John Boehm, is in charge of the United Cerebral Palsy fund for a ten-county area. Because of the flu epidemic she was left with a shortage of door to door workers. Many of our Scouts volunteered to help with the collections. They were Gary Boehm, Kevin Doran, David Walter, Bill Adams, Jeff Hofstetter, Bob Decker, Kerry Decter, Mike Joza, -Craig Steiner, Jim Cole, Gfeg Schmidt, George Lossman and Neil Roberts. The Eagle River cave campout is coming up next weekend. Some Scouts and Webeloes from Troops 131 and 452 will also be joining us for this event. Olson of the Bureau of the Census Regional office in Chicago announces. The questions are aimed at determining the porportion of households in the U.S. with television sets, the proportion with color sets, and the proportion with sets which can receive UHF. Answers to these questions help government and business in decisions affecting the establishment of new broadcasting facilities. The survey is taken annually. Last year's figures showedthat approximately 94 percent ofthe households in the United States had at least one television set. Approximately 19 percent of the households had a color set and 42 percent were equipped for UHF reception.
