PLAINDEALER PHOTO. The Law Serves You New Year's Resolutions for Safer Winter Driving The Illinois State Bar association has offered a number of resolutions for motorists who would like to go through the winter without a scratch--or a traiffic ticket. The ISBA says your chances of coming through the months of ice and snow with your fenders, disposition and pocketbook intact will be better if you resolve to: 1) Maintain safe interval between vehicles. The law requires that a driver shall not follow another vehicle "more closely than is reasonable and prudent," considering highway conditions. 2) Reduce speed whenever "a special hazard exists ... by reason of weather or road conditions." 3) Keep windows free of ice and snow. If you don't you are improving your chances of an accident and liability for damages. 4) Turn on headlights (not just parking lights) at sundown or "at any time visibility is so limited as to require the use of ts for safety..." 5) Never offer to push another vehicle except in case of emergency, and thenpush the vehicle only far enough to remove it from the roadway or any immediate hazard. It's against the law to push a car with a dead battery or cold engine in an effort to get it started. 6) Always signal for a turn. If the electric signal is inoperative, you MUST roll down the window on the driver's side and give the appropriate hand signal. 7) Give the appropriate turn signal to indicate a change of lane or start from a parallel parked position (a new law). But do not use a flashing turn signal on one side of a parked or disabled vehicle, or as a "do pass" signal to motorists approaching from the rear. 8) Never leave the motor running when the vehicle is parked on a roadway unless the driver is in the car. Finally, the ISBA says, resolve to watch for those special dangers such as ice on bridges when the rest of the pavement is clear. Ice lasts longer on bridges because there is no ground heat to melt it. OTHER BIRTHS Mrs. Agnes Schaefer is a proud great-grandmother for the first time.
