Dinner Speaker Talks On Drugs, Alcoholism Persons attending the annual dinner meeting of the membership of the Family Service and Mental Health Clinic for Mc- Henry County heard main speaker, James Renz, Director of Community Concern for Alcoholism, give a frank talk on "Drugs and Alcoholism." Mr. Renz indicated that, "the field of alcoholism is in a position that mental health was twenty years ago. The police departments of today are expected to mop and sweep the problem of alcoholism off the streets and into the jail." Who is the alcoholic of today? "The alcoholic of today is not necessarily a drunken bum," said Renz; "only 5 percent of alcoholics ever reach skid row. Most alcoholics work every day, live with their families, drive cars, pay taxes, and they are your friends. Alcohol is listed as a major cause of 75 percent of divorces. Using the E. M. Jellinek formula, there are approximately 2,500 alcoholics in McHenry county today," cited Renz. Mr. Renz also covered the problem of drug use. "At least 70 to 75 percent of high school students are trying and testing marihuana today. The psychological drugs that alter reality and are used by the late high school, post high school and college students are cocaine, marihuana, LSD, STP, amphetamines, and diet pills," remarked Renz. "The heroin user generally will not touch LSD, because in heroin he knows1 what he's got, but in LSD he doesn't. Although LSD is on the downgrade in use, LSD and marihuana are the glamour drugs that are now getting all of the attention by the public. The. 'Up and Down' drugs (amphetamines and barbiturates) should always be under medical supervision," said Renz.
