\ PG. 12 - PLAINDEALER - WED. J/NU29, 1969 Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jan. 17, 1929) Mayor Peter W. Frett of Mc Henry had the pleasure of attending the inauguration of Louis L. Emmerson, governor of Illinois, and other state officials at Springfield Monday. The McHenry Kiwanis club held its regular dinner meeting at Niesen's Cafe last Thursday evening and was entertained by the high school male quartet which rendered several numbers. The quartet is under the direction of Miss Lillian Kortendick and is composed of Anthony Schneider, Elmer Meyer and William and Albert Vales. Miss Bernice Weber acted as accompanist. Wallace Woodburn, who recently sold the Central Market in McHenry to George Schreiner, has accepted the position of manager at the Skinner Market in Woodstock. Mrs. Paul Doherty and Miss Lola Boyle were hostesses at a party and miscellaneous shower in honor of Miss Eleanor Phalin. The affair was given at the&home of Mrs. B. Relihan. Mrs. Floyd Cooley has accepted the position of . first grade teacher in the grade school to fill the vacancy made by the resignation of Miss Eleanor Phalin. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Takerf from the files of Jan. 20, 1944) A poultry course will begin Jan. 26 in the high school building. The course is open to any one interested in poultry raising. Two McHenry men received their silver wings from flying schools in Texas and Oklahoma. - They are Frank Johnson and Chester Colby. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Smith of Johnsburg celebrated their silver wedding anniversary Saturday evening with a 6 o' clock dinner for friends and relatives. The "swap" campaign in which War Stamps are given in trade for idle or broken electric appliances is meeting a favorable response in McHenry, according to William H. Althoff hardware and Cary Electric shop. Mrs. Agnes T. MacMeekin, Worthy Grand Matron of the Order of Eastern Star of Illinois, has dedicated her year's work to patriotic service and charity. On Jan. 22 Mrs. Mac Meekin will be heard on radio for one hour which will be devoted to the sale of war bonds. The amountof $3,000,000 has „been raised from the sale of series E War Savings bonds to purchase a bomber the name "Eastern Star of Illinois" being enough > bonds to purchase a $5000,000 completely equipped hospital plane. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from Jan. 8, 1959) Firemen were called to the DeVries home at Third avenue to extinguish flames in a car Service News belonging to a member of the family. It is believed a short in a wire might have caused the fire. Considerable damage resulted. A beautiful wedding was solemnized Jan. 3 when Miss Frances Thomas of Chicago became the bride of Mr. Eugene P. Freund of McHenry. The 5 o'clock afternoon nuptial rite took place in St. Rita's Catholic church with Rev, Fr. Reidy, O.S.A. officiating. Peter Wagner, 72, of Volo, died Jan. 3 in his home following, a heart attack. Phil W. Mangold of McHenry has joined the Marticke and Nixon firm on the corner of Elm street and Riverside Drive as sales manager. The office of Secretary of State Charles F. Carpentier / has granted a change of name> to Carey Electric shop, Inc., which,.,is now Electric Appliance, Incv Mr. and Mrs. A1 Phannensti 11 announced the engagement of their daughter, Ruth, to Dave Granger recently. Thomas J. English, seaman, U.S.N, of McHenry is serving aboard the guided missile cruiser U.S.S. Boston operating out of Boston, Mass. Employ Full Time Family Caseworker (Continued from page 1) McHenry County as a full time family caseworker. Wennerdahl was a social worker for the Lake County Mental Health center in Waukegan and is a certified social worker for the State of Illinois. He received his B. A. degree from Rockford college, his B. D. degree from Trinity Evangelical Dignity school and his M.S.W. degree from the University of Illinois. His Master of Social Work training program was at Downey V. A. hospital and Presbyterian St. Lukes hospital in Chicago. He is the first full time family caseworker employed since the merger,of the Mental Health center and Family Sendee agency. The petitions are to be filed with the secretary of the school board at the school board office at 3926 West Main street in McHenry. It is almost time for everyone to look for new calendars. VICTOR C. FREUND Victor C. Freund, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Freund, 1808 Main street, Spring Grove, was promoted to Army Specialist Four Dec. 28 while assigned to the 39th Artillery division at Fort Bragg, North Carplina. Sp/4 Freund is a chart operator in the division's C-Brty, 4th Bn. unit of FDC (Fire Direction Control). He entered the Army in May, 1968, completed basic training at Fort Polk, Laf Prior to his promotion he had six weeks of advanced training at Fort Campbell, Ky. The 24-year-old soldier is a graduate of Marian Central Catholic high school, Woodstock. His wife, Martha, is with him in North Carolina. They are living in Fayetteville. Mrs. Hodoval, 41, whose husband was on duty as a fireman in,Berwyn, apparently attempted to flee when overcome by smoke. She was found near , an upstairs window. The family pet, a St. Bernard dog, barred police from entering the home and they were forced to shoot the animal. The above is a typical United States Coast Guard auxiliary course in Small Boat Seamanship. The course is being offered in McHenry for a period of nine weeks, starting Feb. 11, at West campus high school. Lacrosse is the oldest game in the New World, researchers feel. Gene Little, community school director for Districts 15 and 156, has announced that in cooperation with the U. S. Coast Guard auxiliary a course will be offered in Small Boat Seamanship. William A. Robinson of Division 22 will be the instructor. Those who are interested in the course may register Jan. 27 to 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the McHenry Junior high school or by calling Central Administration, 385-7210. The nine-week course will meet Tuesdays, 7 to 9 p.m., starting Feb. 11 in West campus high school. Car wrecks, involving one car only, accounted for 37 percent of highway fatalities last year.
