From The Farm Adviser Desk FIRE -XONSTANT THREAT Fire, always a constant threat, took thousands of Illinois lives and destroyed millions of dollars worth of property in 1968. ^ Combustible materials, sparks from motors, smoking and matches combine to increase the danger of fires. It takes three items to make a fire - these are: air, heat and fuel. Leave any one of the three out and there is no fire. Fight fires by breaking the fire triangle. Do your daily work with the threat of fire in mind. Keep combustible materials away from possible heat sources. Install or repair lightning rods.. When fire strikes, your greatest enemy is distance from the local fire department and from an adequate water supply. For these reasons, keep a fire extinguisher handy and know how to use it. ACCIDENTAL POISONINGS Each year in Illinois", a little more than 11,000 children below the age of 12 eat or are exposed to a hazardous substance. This report, filed by University of Illinois Extension entomologist Roscoe Randell, states that of all cases reported to the Department of Health in Springfield acci-it ntal swallowing of medicine topped the list. Household preparations or cleaning agents - pesticides - paints and cosmetics were all important in accidental poisonings. A PIG'S LIFE Baby pigs will repay you later for the "tender loving care" you give them the first few days of their life. The first day of a pig's life should be the busiest. Notch the ears first thing. It is especially important to be able to identify the gilts born in big litters. Clip the needle teeth and if the pigs are to be raised in confinement, dock their tails. It's a good idea to dip the navel into a mixture of two percent iodine in 40- to 70- percent alcohol solution. On the third day, give the pig an iron shot in the muscle in the back of the neck, or get him started on oral iron treatments. Creep feed should be offered in a week to 10 days. Pigs cm sows with plenty of milk may not eat quite this early, but give thiem a choice. Castration is recommended by two weeks of age. Wean sometime from four to eight weeks. Size is more a determining factor than age. This, time of year, supplementary heat is usually needed in the farrowing house. If pigs are piled up, shivering or have rough hair coats, that's your cue to turn up the heat. Young pig 5 need a temperature of 75 degrees to 80 degrees F., and must be protected from drafts. Space heaters help keep the building dry as well as warm. TOP SOYBEAN YIELDS Winners of the 1968 Illinois Five-Acre Soybean Yield contest were named this week.
