But the troubles of this world - the war in Vietnam and the pressures of a competitive society - were never to be his. Born to a wheel chair which accommodated needs that increased with the pas sing years, his own problems far exceeded ours in a life destined from the beginning to be brief. A keen mind and sense of humor, united with an enviable determination, characterized Rick among those rare individuals who, despite seemingly insurmountable handicaps, serve others rather than be served. Rt. 120, was burglarized Sunday night and the intruders made away with between $600 and $700 in cash, tools and auto parts. A spokesman for the firm said entrance was made through a side window. A soft drink machine was broken and about $60 in cash was taken from the machine and a cash register. The burglars started one car and drove part way across the show room floor. An attempt was made to remove one of the. front seats but it is believed they may have been frightened before completing the work. Green street, McHenry, on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 12:45 p.m., to discuss this phase of local government. Mrs. Earl Murray of McHenry, chairman of the Local Government study (LoGo), will be assisted by Mrs. Frank Sek and Mrs. George Hoffman also of McHenry, in presenting a look at schools from state and local levels. " We hope to present a broad view of the state situation, as well as take a look at local problems," said Mrs. Murray. The women have interviewed Royce Marble, business manager of the McHenry school system, who has aided them in preparing material which will show comparisons between local and state financing. Possible changes in school government structures will also be discussed. The LoGo study group will continue to study other phases of local government and invite others to join them. Those interested may have further information by calling Mrs. Murray. Smith of 1803 W. River Terrace drive, McHenry, was taken to McHenry hospital suffering a broken leg in several places after his delivery truck was struck head-on by an auto driven by Richard Madden of 4707 Winnebago drive, Wonder Lake. Madden was charged with improper lane usage, driving while intoxicated and with a suspended license. Police said Madden was travelling west on Rt. 120 when he came upon another car ahead and swerved into the eastbound lane and hit the Smith vehicle. Richard L. Gehrke of Marengo was ticketed for driving while intoxicated and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after a two-car crash on N. Front and Elm street. Backed by favorable experiences in other communities in which the system has been put into operation, the C. of C. officers and Manager Carl Prosser are hopeful that shoplifting and fraudulent check writing may no longer be a major problem to the business community. There is still time for Chamber members to join. Only through the promise of cooperation with the program will members benefit. The system features a chain action in which members notify others if they notice either a suspect or actually see a shoplifting maneuver taking place. Cooperators will take down tell-tale evidence and call the Chamber office with their observations. This starts the chain, with five members being called, who in turn, will call another three. The city police department also will be alerted to the situation. Each member participating in the program will be sent a card with names and phone numbers of those for whom he is responsible for giving notification. Chamber of Commerce members are reminded that only those in good standing who have indicated their willingness to make calls will be listed. Ao incident in the business district last weekend points up the importance of abolishing these fraudulent practices which become more prevalent in a growing community. A lady shopper dropped her packages and purse in the parking lot of a local store to hurry to the aid of children in a parked car, which had started to roll backwards. This year's AFS student, Arnfinn Stokkan, from Norway, and other foreign students from this area will be guests at assemblies, enjoy lunch with the students, and have dinner and spend the evening with members of the AFS club. Anyone interested is invited to attend the assemblies. Last Monday evening, parents and interested adults enjoyed a meeting with Arnfinn and Brad Swain, a student from Woodstock who has returned recently from Turkey, where he was an Americans Abroad student. Arnfinn would be happy to be a guest at meetings if members of local groups would like to meet him. They may contact him at the Philip Wheelock home, 1407 W. Draper road, McHenry, where he is making his home. The AFS program locally is carried out through the cooperation of a student club and an adult organization. The objective of the latter is to elect officers who will supervise the selection of a host famr.ly, also assist in naming an American student to go abroad, and help obtain financial contributions. Mrs. Lipke, who lived alone, is believed to have awakened to find rooms adjoining her bedroom afire. She reached a telephone operator, but apparently fell away from the phone for she was heard only to cry "Fire, fire" before the voice was stilled. The operator was given no name, and the fact that Mrs. Lipke's number was unlisted made the task of finding the exact location more difficult. Fire Chief Justen was alerted and he and other members of Company I remained beside the phone for almost an hour before they were advised of the address. After it was obtained, McCullom Lake police were called and hurried to the scene, along with members of Company I and also Company n, who furnished water to fight the blaze. Although there were homes nearby, at least one of them occupied, apparently no one noticed the fire because of the early hour.
