PLAINDEALER PHOTO PG. 6 - PLAINDEALER - WED, FEB. 12, 1969 Earl Walsh SO I HEAR NSports Editor Fishermen and fisher ladies are getting all steamed up in anticipation of the big ice fishing contest at McCullom Lake next Saturday and Sunday. ' People came from near and far last year to enter the contest or just to enjoy the day as spectators. They have a lot of fun and enthusiasm at the Lake and when the ice has melted the profits are used to further youth programs. Beach improvements also benefit everybody. The White Sox are in the news. They haven't found a long ball hitter, but they have hired 15 little cuties to mix with the crowd and attend to their needs. They call those gals Soxettes. Now we need Sockettes. Not that we are opposed to the gals. No, sir'. Now they think Nellie Fox may manage the Washington : Senators on an interim basis. They might do worse on a permanent basis. Nellie was a winner. The papers say Lev. Alcindor and all his 7 foot frame suffers from headaches. No mention of the headaches he has given opposing basketball players. One smart gal in our office gays, "Do you know how Alcindor gets those headache We didn't know. "Bumping his head going through doorways," says that gal. in conference competition, just remember this is the first year with a pool. Reports are very encouraging. Coaching and practice are beginning to show. Watch our boys in a couple of years. John R. Schmitt was in to see what we are going to do about our White Sox this year. After full discussion, we decided everything will be just dandy. (We know that after last year things can't get worse. John and Yours truly had a rough time with the you-know-who fans.) Our sports section is so crowded we might as well sign off ^nd leave room for the rest. EDDIE the EDUCATOR s a y s . . . Basketball Game Of The Century The basketball game of thex century will be played cm Sunday, Feb. 23, at the St. Mary's gy m, at 1:00 in the afternoon. St. Mary's gym, Woodstock, ELL. The Harvard Aiders are composed of the men from the Harvard Rescue Squad and are coached by Harry Stafford. There will be a small donation collected at the door, and the proceeds will be used towards the purchase of a rescue equipment truck for the Mc- Henry County sheriffs department. We hope to see a good crowd at this game. G.A.A. MOMS ATTEND MOMMY WRECK NIGHT By Pat Morrison On Thursday, Feb. 6, 186 mothers and daughters attended the annual G.A.A. Mommy Wreck Night. Some of the activities included basketball shooting, volleyball, aerial darts, and numerous relays. Points were given to the teams for winning games against other teams and the winning team was announced at the end of the evening. Refreshments were served and entertainment provided by the G.A.A. Board. FRESHMEN CAGERS RUN RECORD TO 8-2 The Warrior Frosh basketbailers ran their record to 8 wins and 2 losses ^this past Monday with a win over North Chicago's freshmen, 40-29. Rick Cooper led the Warrior attack with 17 points and a surprising 13 rebounds as Mc- Henry jumped off to quick lead which they never relinquished. The Warrior zone defense kept North Chicago away from the boards, and the orange and black offense was potent enough to puncture the Warhawk.defense for 40 tallies. Coach Gary Collins felt this was a great team win on offense, because North Chicago had handed the freshmen a one point loss earlier io the season. He was especially pleased at how the Warrior front liners kept the big men of North Chicago away from the boards. So the little Warriors carry on with their winning tradition, check their schedule if you would like to watch the varsity of the next few years. The victory was sweet revenge for the Scots who had lost a previous contest to the" Knollers" 77 to 66. Trailing by 7 points, 40 to 33 at the half, the picture looked bleak for the McHenry five. It looked even bleaker when Henry Lamkin who had tallied 18 points in the first half fouled out 4 minutes later. The Scots fought back, however, and finally caught and passed the Knollers with 5 minutes left in the contest. The Scots led by 9 points.with 3 minutes left but had to hang on in the last minute as Maryknoll made a last ditch effort to tie the score. Rich Leigh did a fine job as a replacement for Lamkin, hitting 6 free throws in a row in the clutch moments. Mike Scornavacco with 16 points and Jim Mach and Ron Taylor with 15 and 12 respectively gave the Scots some well balanced scoring. Next home game for the Scots will be Thursday, Feb. 13. at 7:30 p.m. at Marian Ceiftral. Opponent for the evening will be the fine DePaul university frosh. Harry Shields, outstanding player from Crystal Lake, is a starter on the DePaul freshman squad. McHENRY COUNTY COL LEGE v.s. Although the varsity members were downed by Prospect 81-14, and by Woodstock 74-21, the junior varsity managed a 54-38 victory over the Streak swimmers after a 60-35 defeat at the hands of Prospect. Once again a handful of varsity records were broken as the times improved once again. New Warrior varsity records were set by Harvey, Roberts, Roby, Bender , and the 400 yard relay team of Brand, Anderson, Mac Donald, and Phillips. Against FYospect the 200 yard medley relay team set a new varsity record, and Mac Donald managed a new mark in the 200 yard individual medley. And so our scores gradually improve from week to week, and scores slowly creep iqp from week to week. There is no doubt about the improvement being shown, and with an underclass win under our belts, things are bound to get better. Local Fishermen Winners At Channel Lake Derby Sunny skies and moderating temperatures brought out a crowd of about 3,000 people to join in the fun and contests at the Northern 111. SPORTS SPORTSMEN SHARE HONORS WITH WIVES AT ANNUAL BANQUET - The Wauconda Sports mens Club members and wives held their annual banquet in Glenview recently. Pictured above are wives of the officers receiving their comical "Gas Head" (big-talk) award plaques from Madeline Amour of Island Lake. Seated left to right is Mrs. Fred Wahl, wife of vicepresident Fred Wahl; Mrs. Tom McMahon (secretaries wife); Mrs. Ken Glysing (president's wife); Mrs. Herb Thomas (board member's wife); and Mrs. James Paddock (board member's wife). Master of ceremonies Fred Amour of Island Lake figured the wives were more appealing to the eye, so the awards were presented to the ladies on behalf of their husbands as the husbands looked on. Member Carl Johnson of Wauconda, personally received a "Mighty-Hunter" award for bagging the most birds during the season. All awards were designed by Fred Amour and his wife Madeline. Don Criel of Chicago gave the opening toast to the club, Herb Pollock of Wauconda read a resume of the club's activities during 1968, and Tom Reilly of Wauconda introduced the new members. Ken Glysing of McHenry gave the retiring president's speech, and Fred Wahl of Wauconda rendered his acceptance address as the new president for 1969. The highlight of the evening was entertainment by Hal Otis, playing club member's favorite piano selections and offering a series of unusual stories and comedy.
