PG. 8 - PLAINDEALER - FRI. FEB. 14, 1969 i The McHenry Area •-- Clinic---"I Lionel's problem troubles almost all the teen-agers in high school and college. So discuss this case with young people. And don't forget that a good conscience is a superb Vocational Guidance counselor! Also,, that "& Son" aids both partners in this modern competitive society! By - George W. Crane, Ph.D., M. D. " - CASE J - 516: Lionel J., aged 17, is puzzled. "Dr. Crane," he began, "I am goinjg'to be ready for college next term. "But I don't know what I want to be! " My father is a dental surgeon and he'd like to have me take up dentistry, but I am not wildly enthusiastic about it, yet I don't have any special objections, either. "So how should a person pick his future life's work?" CONSCIENCE AND JOBS A well developed conscience is one of the best Vocational Advisers you can ever consult. So avoid any job whose net influence on mankind is to produce a high increase in cancer, heart attacks, auto accidents, disease, broken homes or other subversive influences. Instead, follow the advice of Horace Mann, Father of our American Public Schools, who stated: "Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity." Abraham Lincoln similarly held up before himself the goal of "planting roses where thistles grew before." At the age of 65, when you may retire, you will want not just financial security but klso peace of mind. And it is a tonic to your soul to look back and realize that you safeguarded health, preserved happy homes, made children's lives happier instead of sadder, and advanced the Golden Rule philosophy. Whether you work in medicine or journalism, manufacturing or farming, accountingor music,, you can thus feel elation of your soul. That's not true if you deal in liquor, tobacco, gambling, pornographic merchandise and race prejudice. " Dental surgeons are actually the most important branch of our modern medical field! For they insure us longer life by saving our teeth so we can ingest the proper diet. They eliminate cosmetic inferiority complexes, too, by straightening the, teeth of teenagers and removing the "olc witch" profile of middle age via modern dentures. Besides, success nowadays is such a competitive matter that it is smart to take advantage of your dad's and granddad's pioneering in any legitimate field. For when you then wish to go on vacation, if you are in business or office practice, a man of the same name can still handle your patients or customers in your absence. And this is a decided asset in business andtheprofessions. But don't fret at the age of 17 if you haven't yet become enthused about a specific career. Half of my senior students at Northwestern university still didn't know what they were going to do when they graduated the following month! Just pick the general direction of the "goal line," as it were, for you don't need to know the precise spot where you wish to cross it! Get into gear and start studying, for the passage of time will then move you forward toward success. As you acquire knowledge of, and proficiency in, any field, you will find that you begin to like it, for we usually like the known! To steer your future more wisely, send for my "Vocational Guidance Booklet," enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 20 cents. It contains several tests and will help you make higher exam grades in school. (Always write to Dr. Crane . in care of this newspaper, enclosing a long stamped, addressed envelope and 20 cents to cover typing and printing costs when you send for one of his booklets.) Here and There In Business NEW HOME --Adams Brothers Radiator Service has moved one building west into a new building that was built this past autumn and winter for the purpose oi providing more efficient operation. DECLARE DIVIDEND Investors Stock Fund, Inc., the fourth largest mutual fund in the nation, will distribute a first quarter dividend amounting to approximately $13,392, 000 to shareholders of record Jan. 30. It was the 94th Consecutive quarterly dividend paid by the company. YOUTH DISCUSS DOPE ADDICTION SUNDAY, FEB. 16 Narcotics and dope addiction will be discussed at a youth group meeting at the home of the Rev. and Mrs. Richard Bennet in Harvard on Sunday evening, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. The Rev. Russell W. Ford, recently appointed rector of St. Michael's Episcopal church in Barrington, will open the discussion by speaking from his experiences and training. Fr. FEB. 14, 1969 - PLAI NDEALER - PG. 9 Audubon Club To View Allerton Club Slides A public meeting whicji. is hoped to attract a farge attendance is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, in Central gride school auditorium, corner Paddock street and McHenry avenue, Crystal Lake. There will be no ticket charge or collection. Personable young Bob Beamon, of River Forfest, will be the speaker, narrating his color slide pictures of Allerton park, the magnificent 1,500 acres given to the University of Illinois for the education and enjoyment of this and future generations, but now threatened with ruin by a dam and reservof?proposed by the Army Corps of Engineers. Beamon himself is an engineer and well qualified to explain why the solution of Decatur's water supply problem does not need to cost the people of Illinois at least $65,000,000 and inundate Allerton park. The Harz^1 report, compiled by engineers but to date repudiated by the Army Corps of Engineers, offers 21 alternative plans. Audience participation will be encouraged at the meeting in Crystal Lake, a question and answer period following Beamon's talk, and a coffee hour affording pleasant opportunity for personal conversations. An increasing number of people in Illinois, and conservationists in other states also, are joining in the Save Allerton Park campaign. McHenry county chapter of Illinois Audubon society, of which Maurice S. Watson of Crystal Lake is president, is spearheading local efforts. Bpb Beamon became acquainted with Allerton park, which is 26 miles southwest of Champaign at Monticello, while he was a student at the University of Illinois. Since Robert Allerton presented the forested parK to th^university in 1946, many classes have usedit for scientific research as has the Natural History Survey. As soon as Beamon learned of the Oakley damand reservoir plans endangering thepapk/he hastened to begin contributing what he can to its protection. He has appeared before many audiences to tell them the Allerton story and show them pictures of the handsome Allerton mansion filled with treasures from around the world, the formal gardens, statuary, miles of trails and woodland roads, and examples of the 1,000 types of flowering plants, 80 percent of which would fall before the bulldozer, also the abundance of small animals and 150 different species of birds, many of whose habitats would be destroyed. - P ERSONALS ~ Mv. and Mrs. Ralph Jur,:en have returned from a two week's trip to Marathon, F!a., where they visited the latter's sister and husband, M;-. and Mrs. Ben Freund, of Elkhorn, Wis., at their winter horn:.
