There has been much interest shown in the introduction of sex ^education in the Mchenry Public Schools. Miss Helen Curran, assistant superintendent in charge of instruction, informed the group of steps being taken to plan courses to be offered in the schools. A committee has been formed which consists of a doctor, a clergyman, a parent, seven teachers and four students. This committee met on Jan. 12 to discuss plans for developing the program for the grades 1 through 12. There is a Curriculum council -for the McHenry public schools, under the supervision of Miss Curran, and includes teacher representatives from all of the attendance centers. Hie teachers disseminate information to teachers in their buildings, including written programs in effect in other buildings. Audio visual materials on sex education and family living, among other subjects, are made available. The proposed program on sex education will be presented to the Curriculum council, to the administrators, and then to the board of education for approval. Mrs. Irwin's second grade class at St. Mary's school was honored this past week to receive a note of thanks from President Richard Nixon, answering congratulatory letters sent to him. His note read as follows: "As I undertake the responsibility of providing new leadership for America in the years ahead,' I want you to know how grateful I am for your thoughtful message. The knowledge of your support will be a source of strength and inspiration in the years ahead." On the day of Mr. Nixon's inauguration, each child wrote a congratulatory letter to him while listening , to the parade proceedings on the radio. The students had expressed such an avid interest in learning about the democratic process that their teacher decided to show them that children, too, may play a small role in government. They received their greatest reward with the President's response to their efforts. H^PPY VALENTINE'S DAY Wayne J.
