Grandma Sez - - - Well, here I am, back in my old rockin' chair, and a tryin* V pick up the loose ends. Seems good t* be back home again, but I sure miss bavin* the family around, an' all the fun that three boys kin cook up, f make "Granny" laugh. Last year, when I wuz a visitin' them, I made,'the remark that I would like t' stay there a couple & weeks or more, but I didn't plan; it, and tlie way it turned out wasn't in my order fer Christmas, at all. After the worst part wuz over, and I began t' mend, it was real • pleasurable t' be able t' enjoy them, all. My goodness, seems like I dropped some time, somewhere. Why, in jest a few more weeks the first day o' spring will be here, and the flowers and birds will be back. Seems like yesfterday that I vyuz a r f • Friendship Club Hears Spa ce Talk The Friendship club met at the First United Methodist church Saturday night for a delicious roast beef pot-luck dinner. Afterward, President Elmer Stange conducted a short business session and Clara Swanson led the devotional. The program was in charge of Vivian and Lisle Bassett. Mrs. Bassett introduced A. E. Campbell, wire chief of Illinois Bell Telephone company, Rockford. Mr. Campbell took his audience on a trip to the moon and back. He explained many details of how the rocket performed leaving the earth's magnetic field, travelling through space to the magnetic field of the moon and its return trip. He pointed out the many details that had to be accurately performed to assure a safe return, showing a small model rocket and explaining what function each section performed on the round trip. One of the very interesting things he pointed out' was that if a present day rocket left the center of our planetary system to travel to the ninth planet, farthest away from the center, and travel at present Rocket speeds, it would require about 80 years. Suppose a baby was born in the Rocket at take-off? The baby would be about 80 years old by the time the Rocket reached the outer planet. To return it would be about 160 years old. His talk gave evidence this is not a horse-andbuggy age but of rocket speeds if one is to explore outer space. 1948 SAAB'S Priced $300 Off List Full selection of 1969 Toyoto Corallas, Coronas and Crowns. Even if it stays cold fer a while, there's always somethin' in the air that tells o' new life andthe comin* o* Mother Nature's time t' put on her new dress t' celebrate the comin' season. Everyone is a tellin' me that I cain't have a garden, this year, ' cause the work is too hard fer an ol» granny, like me. Bijt I kin tell ye, that the yen t' git the seed catalogues out, an' plan the loveliest part o* my whole year, is hard to put aside. All my life, I used t' dream o' a little place like mine, where, I could turn the soil and plant the seeds, and smell the good, new-turned earth. May seem fupny t' a lot o' folks, but I talk f my plants, and I been mighty proud o' the bountiful gardens, which God and I have been able to produce. Sometimes, other things come up to use up the energy, and then folks have a tendency to blamin' the garden fer makin "Granny" tired, but when a feller, or a gal, has the heart o' a former, born inter them, it's like takin' Christmas away from a little kid, t' deprive them o' that pleasure. So, we'll see, and mebbe "Granny" kin have a little garden t' putter in. Havin' all those goodies put away fer winter, is the bonus fer the lovin' labor, and seems like it wouldn't be as much fun if the garden wouldn't afford gifts o' nice vegetables fer the neighbors. Well, we'll see what happens, and mebbe the good Lord might hear a plea, and bless a "Granny" with the needed energy to work, with Him, in a garden.
