PLAINDEALER PHOTO Give Dental Week Talks In All County Schools Members of the McHenry County Dental society are visiting grade school children throughtout the county this month to give dental talkstoall third grade students. The visit is part of a National Dental Health Week observance which takes place in February to encourage boys and girls to establish good dental health habits early. "Dental health can, and should, last a person a lifetime," says the Dental society. While many doctors are optimistic that almost complete control of dental decay will be possible within the next decade or two, they also stress the need to follow good teeth care habits now. Development of the use of an enzyme called dextranase may help whip tooth decay. Multiple use of fluorides offers solid hope, too. But the McHenry County Dental society offers these few dental health rules to follow now to prevent or lessen tooth decay: 1. Cut down on sweets. If your children have a sweet tooth, let them eat sweets after a meal and then brush their teeth. ' 2. Always brush your teeth immediately after eating, even after a snaek. Crucial period for decay-causing acid to do the most damage is within 30 minutes after you eat. 3. Visit your dentist regularly. He'll keep close check for any developing decay. He'll examine your child for other signs of dental problems. . Concerning gum disease, the McHenry County Dental society says no known cure is yet ravSiliblei" "Prevention is the key it> controlling gum disease; regular fcoothbrushing is the most effective control," the society adds. One surprising statistic to many: While gum disease is thought of as a disease for adults, one in five children has some form of gum disease!
