Conrad Zetterberg Dies Home Fire Takes Life Of Cooney Heights Resident For the second time within a week, a home fire claimed the life of a Mchenry area resident. Conrad Zetterberg, 67, suffocated in his home at 801 Lillian street, McHenry, about 7:48 Thursday evening as he sat in the' front room. Fire Chief Ed Justen, who estimated property damage at $3,000, said Zetterberg probably fell asleep in his chair after dropping a cigarette on the floor. The fire was confined to a small area, but burned completely through the floor. A neighbor, Fred Dolby, 15, had noticed a flickering light in the house as he walked to a friend's home but paid little attention to it. However, on his return five minutes later he noticed the fire and summoned his parents' help. Mr. Zetterberg's pet Beagle dog was howling in the yard and was reluctant to let them go near the home. Fred finally decided to disregard the animal and ran toward the door, but was unable to enter because the flames had reached the entrance, In the meantime, Mrs. Dolby had notified firemen -and members"of Company 1 arrived within jninutes. Gere Thennes, a fireman who resides in the Cooney Heights subdivision, reached the home first. He entered and dragged the unconscious man outdoors. There, they applied artificial respiration and also employed a resuscitator but to no avail. He was taken to McHenry hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The body was removed to the Brust funeral home in Lombard where last rites were conducted at 1 o'clock Monday. Burial was in Rosehill cemetery, in Lombard. Miller road, McHenry, was injured in a school bus-truck accident that occurred Friday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock on Rt. 120, three miles south of Wonder Lake. The Harry Donner Transportation Co. bus, driven by Carolyn Swanson of Harvard, was travelling east on the highway when she observed an auto ahead. Because no brake lights were visible, the bus driver thought the auto was in motion until she came closer. She applied the brakes on the bus and in doing so the vehicle fishtailed and was struck broadside by a truck driven by Barney Vukelich of Addison and owned by Suburban Express Co., Maywood. Vukelich was unable to avoid the collision according to deputies, even though he swerved. After the crash, the truck travelled into the ditch. In the meantime, the auto responsible for the accident had continued on. The drivers of both of the other vehicles were shaken up but otherwise were uninjured. Judy Gavin and her passenger, Irene Bishop, both of Palatine, were treated in McHenry hospital Friday morning following a two-car crash on Rt. 12 and Old Rand road. The second driver, Wendell Dickson, was taken to Condell Memorial hospital, Libertyville. (Continued on page 16) Commendation Medal Given The Plaindealer has received notification that Army Capt. Three years of planning to construct the new home for chronically ill and those who require extended care reached a milestone with the endorsement of proposals by the state architects in the Illinois Department of Public Health last week. Mrs. Mollie Huffmaster, administrator, said approval is a giant step forward in providing McHenry county citizens with urgently needed facilities for the aged, for those who want sheltered care and for those who need nursing home care in a place approved to receive Medicare patients. At its present facilities, Villa Nursing Home has sixty-eight patients, with a waiting list of twentyfive or more. Dr. William A. Nye, McHenry, who served as medical director at the Villa Nursing Home for many years, said the organization provides a much needed service--and the demand is increasing. Dr. Edward F. Wilt, Jr., chief of staff at McHenry hospital, elaborated on why the problem is becoming increasingly serious. He explained that with the start of Medicare there has been an increase in hospital admissions of older patients.
