Early morning arrives as fishermen begin the final day. Mid temperatures attracted huge crowds to the fourth annual ice fishing derby at McCullom Lake last weekend. It was estimated that former attendance records were broken as sportsmen hauled in a record number of fish. Bob Anderson of Chicago was credited with landing the largest fish on Saturday and maintained the record for the day. His bass weighed 2.48 pounds, which did net break the record for the four years. Creadited with catching the largest fish, also a bass, on Sunday was Robert Freund.. Jim Schultz won the auger contest both days, and was also a four-time winner for largest fish in ther categories. Frank Kurth and Frank Freund were declared oldest men on the lake during the contest. Other Saturday winners included Boyd Knaack, Arthur Gibbons, John Orton, Vern Holm and Bill True. Sunday winners were Ron Creutz, Bob Freund, Anthony Renaud, Debbie Freund, Bob Blake, Dale Hillstrom, Billy Lorch, Larry Madden, Jr., Dan Lennon and John Oukrust. Len Jensen, Jr., of McCullom Lake, William Mehan of Palatine and Charles Lary of McCullom Lake, went home with top prizes. A crucial moment arose when a man from out of town presented a crappie for judging. The judges were skeptical of the color. The problem dissipated, however, when the man did not return to claim his prize. Official judges of the ice fishing derby were game warden, James Vavra; district biologist, Greg Tichacek; and area biologist, Bruce Muenche. All are members of the Illinois Conservation department. McCullom Lake police and the Fox Valley police patrol combined forces to handle the parking problems. Mr. Elmer Kanak was general chairman of the fourth annual winter sports event, which was sponsored by the Cullom-Knoll association. Net receipts will be turned over to the building fund to- enlarge present beach facilities to include a youth center. laindealer hotos If Dressed for the weather, Merwin Schmitt'of McHenry, patiently awaits another nibble.
