There will be a 2:20 pace with eleven of the best pacers in this section of the country and a 2:18 trot with five excellent trotting horses entered. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 17, 1944) Lieut. Eleanor Althoff, .who is at Fitzsimmons General hospital, Denver, Colo., has spoken over radio station KOA, Denver, several times in recent weeks. On these broadcasts she tells of her experiences in Africa in the interest of nurse recruiting. Mrs. Marie A. Deme of McHenry and Nickolas Hasler of Chicago were united in marriage by Justice of the Peace Albert Krause on Sunday. A long and useful life was ended on Jan. 28 when Mrs. Mary Jane Bassett, better known to her mainy friends as "Jennie" or "Grandma" Bassett, passed away at her home on Main street just a few months before her ninety-third birthday. Mrs. Timothy McClarey of Chicago, the former Miss Harriet Boger, was guest of honor at a small gathering of former classmates at the home of Mrs. J. P^ugene Sayler on Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. William Hay last week observed quietly their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary at their home on Washington street. Miss Julia Foley entertained several classmates and friends at her home oh Richmond Road on Saturday afternoon between 2 and 5 o'clock. Games were enjoyed by the young folks after which a delicious lunch was served. TEN YEARS AGO ( Taken from the files of Feb. 5, 1959) Twenty-five McHenry firms are cooperating to bring local residents one of the finest Dollar Day sales ever offered this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6 and 7. Dick Yoss, 20 Orchard Beach, is among twentytwo students at the University of Wisconsin who were recently chosen officers or named to committees of the pledge presidents council on the state university'campus. t BOV SCOUT g NEWS \ TROOP 131 . Needless to say, the Court of Honor was a great success. About seventy-five attended the affair, which was preceded-by a delicious pot-luck dinner. ,-Ja^k Patzke. troop committee crairman, began the ceremonies by extending a hearty welcome and thanked everyone for coming. After the meal, Mr. Patzke turned the meeting over to Bill Reinwall, Advancement chairman, who also extended his welcome and commented on how scouting contributes to the growth of the boy into a good American citizen. After his introductory, he asked the Scoutmaster Stu Hoak to present the tenderfoot awards. Mr. Hoak dramatized the importance ol the Scout oath by illuminating three lights and the Scout laws, twelve lights. One light represented the entire scouting movement. One by one, the lights were extinguished, emphasizing that without the laws and the oath and what they represent, the final light of scouting itself would be extinqui shed. Mr. Bacon, Explorer adviser, presented the second class award to Jim Chestler, and Explorer. He commended Jim on •his earnest desire to learn the scouting from the ground up, as they say. These basics are not required of an Explorer. Proudly, Jim presented his mother with the miniature secondclass pin. Jim's younger brother, Scott, is also a hard working Scout and possibly the incentive that keeps Jim jumping. A "chesty" Carmon Hodges presented the rank of Star to an equally proud son, Bobby. Bob in turn, presented his father with the miniature Star pin and the traditional Scout handshake. Chairman Patzke called Kurt Krcimier to escort his parents to the front. Kurt was also awarded the rank of Stai. Mrs. Kreimier received her pin and all Dad could do was smile from ear to ear-. Kurt isn'_t too enthusiastic about it, but he also has the distinction of having a very nice singing voice. Don't knock it, son! There are man)' who would give much for such a talent. Scoutmaster Hoak presented son, Kevin, with the rank ol" Life. The next step is Eagle, right Kev? Mrs. Hoak got her pin and a big kiss from Kevin - with a little • insistence from Dad. After all, the boss is still the boss. Merit badges toward even higher advancement were awarded to Jim Bacon, Salesmanship and Lifesaving; Ken Betts, Nature, Pioneering, Basketry and Lifesaving; Clay Patzke, Cooking and Lifesaving; Gary Reinwall, Home Repair; Bruce Walters, Home Repair, Rifle and Shotgun and Camping and Jack Weichmann, Painting and Landscaping. Congratulations to all of you Scouts on your achievements. Three ladies, Mrs. Schmidt, Mrs. Bacon and Mrs. Hoak, won an award representing the tenacity and c "irance of wives of scouters. \es, you guessed it, the miniature Bulldog! Although truly earned, the gals would have probably preferred a very large rolling pin. Following the awards, Mr. Bacon introduced Jerry Hart and David George, two new Explorers. The applause expressed a heart welcome. After Jerry and Dave were introduced, the traditional Scout way of expressing appreciation was ordered by extending the ladies 2L HOW'S for the delightful table decorations and the fine food. Future plans were announced for the summer camping program at .Northwoods, fatherson campout in June, etc., so that parents wishing to participate could plan accordingly. All in all, it was a rewarding affair with everyone seemingly a little happier for having at-" tended. I know we were. Tom Russell, Public Relations.
