MARCH 5, 1969 MICE PUBLIC NOTICE A state of Illinois law known Its the "Uniform Act Regulating Traffic on Highways" Article XVI, section 134, authorizes the regulation of weight of loads on highways and twp. roads. Under certain climatic conditions excessive loads will eriously damage roads. A period of not more than 90 days in any one year is allowed for road load protection. BE IT RESOLVED THEREFORE, that because the spring of the year is a most critical time in the life of a road when frost is leaving the ground and excessive loads hauled over the roads at this time will cause great damage, the Mc- Henry Twp. Board of Auditors acting with^the advice of the Twp. Highway Commissioner may post the entire system of McHenry Twp. roads with signs limiting the loads including the weight of the vehicles to not more than eight thousand (8000) pounds per axle and that all law enforcement offices use diligence in enforcing said law. March 5, 12, 1969) SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR STUDENT NURSES A reminder to prospective nurses comes from Mrs. Harry Abraham, chairman of the nurses' scholarship committee for the Woman's auxiliary of Memorial Hospital for McHenry County. "High school seniors at any of our county high schools are invited to look into the nurse scholarships presented annually by the Woman's auxiliary," Mrs. Abraham said this week. Parents with sons or daughters who have not decided on a career after high school are encouraged to check the possibility of nursing as a career for their young man or woman. The Woman's auxiliary scholarship consists of $200 a year for three years to apply to tuition at an accredited school. Persons desiring further information should contact Mrs. Abraham or Bert Hanson, administrator at Memorial hospital . High school officials also have entry blanks. The recipients agree to serve for one year at Memorial Hospital for McHenry County after graduation at the prevailing salary.- Since 1951, twenty-eight girls have been aided in their aspiration to become a nurse through this program. Three are scheduled to return to Memorial hospital this fall following completion of their training. They are Lynn Neumaier and Diane DeVerde, Woodstock, and Algene Scholpp, Cfystal Lake. PUBLIC AID ROLLS INCREASE DURING DECEMBER December public aid rolls were up 8,173 over the previous month, Public Aid Director Harold O. Swank reported. This increase brought the total number of Illinois public aid recipients to 513,508, compared to 505,335 in November. It also represented an increase of 48,017 over the December 1967 caseload of 465,491. While old age assistance and blind assistance decreased in December, disability assistance, aid to dependent cjiildren arid general assistance increased. The increase in the number of public aid recipients also brought about an increase of $330,685 in expenditures. Public aid expenditures in Deceiftber totaled $41,176,794 compared to $40,846,109 for the previous month. Public aid expenditures amounted to $32,- 631,594 in December 1967. The December 1968 caseload included 457,066 persons on assistance to the aged, blind, or disabled and aid to dependent children receiving assistance and eligible for medical care: 56,442 eligible for medical assistance only and 68,892 on general assistance. The caseload in McHenry county was as follows: Total, all •programs, 837, $72,904; old age assistance, 115, $27,797; aid to dependent children, 446, $23- 762; blind assistance, 3, $1,- 603; disability assistance, 75, $16,360; and general assistance 118, $3,382. HAPPINESS?? It is unfortunate that so many people, particularly younger people, have the idea that one must have money and leisure to be happy. The wealthy people who have crossed our path seem to have been about the most unhappy people we have ever known. A good way for parents to have a few minutes alone is to start doing the dishes. Wittinger, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. John F. Wittinger of 7818 Highview drive, Wonder Lake, and husband of the former Miss Linda C. Kearney of Waukegan, is serving aboard the USS Long Beach off the coast of Southern California. His ship is participating in the Navy's second major exercise^ this year, operation "Behavior Pattern." "Behavior Pattern" will aid in maintaining the training level of Navy units in all areas of naval warfare. For the U.S. participants, emphasis will be noted on special tactics useful in Southeast Asian waters and throughout the Western Pacific. Twenty-two ships, including four Canadian units and seventeen air squadrons, are participating in the eight-day, First Fleet exercise. SSG Floyd (Trey) Covalt is now serving in Vietnam. Covalt had his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and attended leadership school at Fort Polk, La., where he earned the leadership award. He was sent to Fort Benning, Ga., for further advanced training, and June 4 of last year was awarded the leadership trophy. The sergeant missed the scholastic trophy by 700th of a point. Sgt. Covalt is married to the former Cathy Miller. \ ' ' HEA JS ST^ TE POLICE Gov. Qgilvie has appointed James P. McGuire, 42, superintendent of the Illinois State Police. "McGuire, of 1727 Henderson St., Chicago, was deputy, chief of the Cook County Sheriffs Police department under Sheriff Joseph I; Woods. Wheat grows in every one of our 50 states, occupies more acres than any other single crop and is harvested or planted someplace in the world every day of the year. NIU DIPLOMAS AWARDED THREE FROM THIS AREA A total of 959 Northern Illinois university students completed undergraduate or graduate degree requirements in January, according to Dr. Wilmoth Price, associate registrar. The graduates will receive their diplomas by mail and their names will be listed in the program for NIU's 70th annual commencement June 7. The degrees will be conferred officially in June. NIU does not hold a mid-year commencement. Completing degree requirements are 681 undergraduate students and 278 graduate students. Among them are Elaine Schmaling, 3423 W. Fairway drive, Ronald J. ORBITING BUTTERFLY BUSY BEES The Busy Bees held the morrthy meeting Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. in St. Patrick's church basement, opening with the pledges and roll call. There were three new members. A committee report was given and old business was discussed. Ed Saunders gave a Federation report. We appointed a committee for Share the Fun which will be held April 18 and 19. We decided on a bowling party which was held Feb. 22. Refreshments for the next meeting 'will be served by Charlene Weingart. The meeting was closed with a report on safety by Ed Saunters.
