PG. 6 - PLAINDEALER - WED. MARCH 5. 1969 N Warriors Upset Broncos 6|-60 In Great Effort by Bert Hagemann The ever scrappy Warriors gave the large parents jiight gathering at Barrington a sour taste in their mouth by nipping the host Broncos in the waning seconds of a hard fought ball game, 61 to 60. The gala celebration for parents of the players was hushed after junior guard Tom Hurckes sunk two crucial free throws amid the din to give the orange and black a three point lead with only fourteen seconds to go in the game. Hurckes' two successful charity tosses climaxed a come from behind, uphill battle for the Mc Henry quintet. The Warriors started the game like they were going to hand it over to the Broncos as they fell jfa arrears 11-3 /•- after only four minutes of play. However, the orange and black surged back to within two points at half time behind the shooting of Don Reinboldt and Gary Fairchild. The Warriors managed to tie the score. up at 50 all by the end of the third stanza, SlVtALL FRY CATCHES BIG FISH -- Jeffrey Yegge, 4^ year old son of the Jack Yegges of Waukesha, Wise., caught the largest and smallest fish while fishing with his Dad at a private lake. Grandma Marie, whom we like to claim as Assistant sports editor, just happened to be showing this picture to the staff so we snatched onto it. We love that smile! SPORTS Earl Walsh SO I HEAR Harlem Diplomats to Bring Razzle Dazzle Basketball to MCHS Basketball's internationally famous Harlem Diplomats will play here at Buckner gym, 8 p.m., Thursday, March 20. The Diplomats, who are rapidly becoming world renowned, recently played in Mexico, Jamaica, Nassau, Brazil and Venezuela where they were labelled the "funniest team ever". The team features an array of basketball comedians. They are led by hilarious playing Goose Jr. and ably supported by jumping Charlie Cook and Ed (Dizzy) Parker. The Diplomats will present basketball's most spectacular magic circle. Parts of this unique circle is done in darkness; only visible objects are the shoes and a glowing basketball. The team is believed to have the greatest group of razzle dazzle ball handlers ever assembled. The game promises to be one of the fine basketball mixed' with delightful comedy. The game is sponsored by the Varsity "M" club. Tickets may be purchased at the West Campus office, Ernie's Sport shop or from any member of the Varsity "M" club. Mike Freund popped in a baseline drive and resulting free throw to narrow the gap to one, and then junior forward Mike Weingart tossed in a 20 footer to put the Warriors on top by one and set the stage for the Hurckes heroics. As usual, the "Hollering Hundred" were on hand, lending their Warriors vociferous support throughout the contest. This, coupled with the never quit attitude evidenced by McHenry, brought abo:it season win No. 4, and a tie I believe for 7th place with Crystal Lake. Certainly this has to be one of coach Ken Ludwig* s most satisfying wins, and the ball club can be well proud of a superb effort. Mrs. Darrell Fox phoned some time ago to ask if any of the Hester boys were playing basketball in college. Forgot to write myself a message not to forget to remember. Anyhow, we checked. Dick and Emily are temporarily out of college athletes, but keep your eye on the sports pages the next four years. Kites were flying last Sunday. Can lawn mowers be far behind? Things will not be the same for Fred Meyer (that Yankee lover ) this season. Mickey Mantle has retired. The Mick was great. Nobody will replace him -- somebody will play his position. The rookie raves are drifting in each day from the warmer climates. There are some great ones each spring, many destined to go back to the minors. You know the old story -- they started throwing curves. Congratulations to our Warrior varsity basketball team and coach. Beating Barrington by one point was a great way to end the schedule. These boys didn't win too often, but let it be known they had plenty of heart and plenty of you know what behind the belts. They lost often, but never quit.
