Sec. 2, Pg. 4 - Plaindealer - Fri. March 14, 1969 Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 28, 1929) The big county basketball tournament at Crystal Lake, which took place on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week, was so well supervised that everything went off smoothly and satisfactorily and the tournament will go down in history as one of the big events of the local high school. Superintendent Duker and the McHenry high school are to be congratulated. Two members of the Mc Henry Orange and Black were picked on the all tournament team by the two officials of the meet. Frett was picked as a forward and Miller; as a guard which is an honor for the individuals as well as for the. M'cHenry high. The farm home of John S. Freund, east of McHenry on Route 20, was badly damaged by fire. Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Schoewer were Chicago visitors Saturday. At this time Mr. Schoewer attended the banquet of l^is Battery E. of the 322nd Field Artillery at the Morrison hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Meyier and son will move soon from the Blake house on Green street to the William J. Welch bungalow on Waukegan street. Floyd Foss was taken to the Woodstock hospital on Monday, where he underwent an operation Tuesday morning. Friends of the popular employee of the West McHenry state bank are hoping for a speedy recovery. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 2, 1944) Sixty friends and relatives of Mrs. Celia Colby, nee Gilbert, attended an "at home" held by her family at her home in Waukegan on the occasion of her ninetieth birthday anniversary. Mrs. Colby, the daughter of Benjamin Gilbert, was born in McHenry on Feb. 26, 1854, and resided here for some thirty years before moving to Waukegan. Her father was one of the early settlers in McHenry and operated a grocery store here for many years. Shooting honors went to Lester Bacon in a contest held in Waukegan where Mr. Bacon is employed as a guard at Johnson Motors. He won sweepstakes honors in the plant production pistol tournament sponsored by the Lake County War Council and Division Three, Chicago Metropolitan area, O.C.D. at P^ort Sheridan. Twenty- five plant guards took part in the tournament. Mrs. Joann Rulien will be guest speaker at the next meeting of the Mothers club March 10 at the home of Mrs. Harry Durland on Riverside Drive. Mrs. Rulien's topic will be "Children With Speech Defects." Mr. and Mrs. Nick M. Justen, who have moved from Ringwood to a home on Green street, were honored at a surprise farewell party at their home by their neighbors and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold J. Rauen and Mrs. Kathryn Frey are spending the week in Washington. The presentation was made at their last P.T.A. meeting. At Wonder Lake rapid progress is being made on the working drawings for the new Nativity Lutheran church, according to Pastor Schroeder and it is hoped that by the end of March they can be submitted for approval to the board of Amierican Missions and the congregation. Sharon Curulewski of Pistiakee Bay road, a senior in the McHenry high school, has been named recipient of the "senior girl citizen" award presented by the Elgin Chapter of the D.A.R. She was selected for the award by her classmates and the school. faculty on the basis of service to school, dependability, leadership and patriotism. "SUBSTANCE" IS CHRISTIAN SCIENCE LESSON - SERMON "Will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?" This verse from I Kings is part of a Bible Lesson-Sermon titled "Substance" to be read this Sunday in the McHenry Christian Science chiirch„ One of the selections to be read from the denominational textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, is the following: "The everlasting I AM is not bounded nor compressed within the narrow limits of physical humanity, nor can he be understood aright through mortal concepts. The precise form of God must be of small importance in comparison with the sublime question, What is infinite Mind of divine Love?" Services at Christian Science society, Lincoln road and Eastwood lane begin at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome. STUDENT WINS DISTINGUISHED RANK AT PURDUE Distinguished student rating was won by 1,957 Purdue university students during the fall semester, representing almost 7 percent of the 28,783 undergraduates. The list released by Registrar Nelson M. Parkhurst included 356 students with straight-A records in their work toward bachelor's or associate degrees. This number represented about 1.2 percent of the undergraduates enrolled on Purdue's five campuses. To qualify for distinguished rating, a student must have a grade index of at least 5.5 points (B plus) out of a possible 6.0 (A) in at least 14 hours of academic credit and have nograde below C (4 points). The distinguished students include David Armit, 2005 N. Woodlawn Park, McHenry. COUNTY FUNDS INVESTED FOR HIGH INTEREST County funds are well" invested, if the latest report of the county Treasurer is any indication. Cal Skinner, Jr., reports that county investments are earning an average of 5.54 percent interest, with some»in-| vestments in federal securities bringing in as much as fi.4percent. Not only is the return on the public's money high, but the investment of county funds is about as complete a$ one can imagine. Skinner points out that of the funds he can invest, over 97 percent were invested. This is an increase of about 3 percent over last year. Over $3 million is invested. In the county's General Fund accounts, for instance, less than $28,000 out of over $2 million remained, uninvested as of Feb. 28, 1969.. Skinner reports, "Investments have been made so that a minimum cash balance is necessary except just prior to the time when bills are paid. TAX FRAUD AUDITOR State Revenue Director George E. Mahin has announced the hiring of an audit supervisor and 10 investigators to check for tax frauds. Edward F. Kane, 61, of 11358 Forest ave., Chicago, a veteran employee of the Internal Revenue Service, will supervise all department auditors "to ensure that the state gets all the money to which it is entitled," Mahin said. Kane formerly served in a similar position for the federal agency, supervising activities in eight midwestern states. Mahin said Kane "recovered millions of dollars and exposed large frauds," in that job. Father John Strazalka, Pastor Sleep in Heavenly Peace Peacc is a baby sleeping. Peace is a walk in God's forests. Peace is gentle Love for one another. Great u ord . . . Peace! We see it in the newspapers, on T.V., in magazines beside horror pictures of war and carnage. But, Peace is not something outside ourselves. It is within. It is the quiet calmness of mind and soul, unperturbed, undismayed. But it is difficult to acquire this frame of mind, this elusive state of soul, this tranquil spirit. To achieve it lie need guidance and help, and therefore we turn to our Church. Here, one sets problems in order, sees difficulties in perspective and consults with one's Creator. Peace of heart is a two-way street--our -way to God, and His way to Us. Copt/right 1969 Keisler Advertising Service, Inc , .Slrajfcurp, Va.
