For some 4,000,000 American homeowners, a new job has been added to traditional springtime hptne improvement chores -- getting the family pool in shape for the summer season. Assuring pool safety begins with springtime precautions, to eliminate common hazards and to make sure the proper equipment is at poolside to cope with any accidents that may occur. Dr. John Henderson, medical director of Johnson & Johnson, gives several safety suggestions. In addition to normal pool maintenance steps, the following checklist is recommended: 1. All electrical connections should be properly grounded with special attention given to filter motor and lighting. Extension cords should be checked for proper gauge, and electrical outlets repaired. 2. Repair of loose or broken concrete, tile or wood in deck areas is important. If there is a grassy area around pool, it should be free of stones, pebbles and other debris which might injure people emerging barefoot. 3. Wooden decks, benches should be sanded and refinished to avoid splinters; pool ladder checked to make sure all rungs are tight, properly finished and free of splinters. 4. If pool is left filled with water over the winter, it must be treated properly to be sure it is fit for swimming. It will probably need "shock" chlorination, and treatments with an algicide and water clarifiers. Care should be used when using these chemicals, and package directions should be followed to the letter. When the swimming season starts, every pool should have four basic items of safety equipment: an adequate supply of flotation devices such as rings and Jackets, a shepherd's crook long enough to reach halfway across the pool, a comprehensive first aid kit and a Resusitube Airway for fast, effective artificial respiration. One basic rule a pool owner must enforce rigorously is that all non-swjmmers -- no matter what their age--wear some type of flotation device anywhere near the pool. It can mean the difference between pleasure and peril. A shepherd's crook, or even a long bamboo pole, should be at every poolside. It is used to assist swimmers in trouble. It is better to extend a pole to a bather in trouble and pull him to safety, rather than to dive in and risk being dragged down by an hysterical person. The shepherd's crook has an added advantage -- its curved hook can be used to snare a person's body, if needed. Minor cuts, scrapes and scratches are inevitable during pool fun. These should be cared for promptly with basic supplies on hand in a wellequipped first aid kit. Should an immersion emergency occur, fast, effective resuscitation can save a life. Currently, the most widely recommended method of resuscitation is mouthto- mouth rescue breathing. The Resusitube Airway -- an S-shaped plastic tube -- speeds this technique. If the Resusitube is not available, at least one adult should be present who can perform mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing. Paint Remodels Fast facelift for a room can often be accomplished, by a paint job. Modern convenience paints feature ease of application, fast drying and vanity of matching colors. Pastels and light tints make small rooms seem airy, look larger. In large rooms, interest is added by combining pastel walls with accents of a deeper hue. FENCE CO.
