Maple, and a senior at North Central college in Naperville, has concluded his collegiate basketball career as the seventh highest scorer in the school's history. Smith, a McHenry Community High School graduate, played his final game for North Central on F riday, Feb. 28, leading, the Cardinals to a 76-64 upset win over St. Joseph's college of Rensselaer, Ind. He scored 22 points in the victory and ran his career scoring total to 801 points. In four years he played in 70 games for NCC and had a career average of 11.44 points per game. He also pulled in 170 rebounds. Smith, a 6'1" and 180-lbs., played both guard and forward for the Red Birds and although a little small for the front line, used his fine jumping ability to hold his own with taller opponents. A consistent scorer, Smith was in double figures in 21 of the Cards' 24 games this season. He had his best night against Carthage when he hit 9 of 11 shots and scored 25 points. A three letter winner in basketball at North Central, he won three basketball and one golf letter in high school. Smith is a math major and plans to enter the business field after he completes his studies at North Central, a private, coeducational, liberal arts college located 29 miles west of Chicago. St. Patrick's Day came and went. 'Twas a great day for the Irish. Added to our usual green tie, we had a prized gift from a former employee, Marge Beth -- A big Top O*' The Mornin' Shamrock with a chip of the Blarney Stone in the center. They saw us coming. One card from a secret pal told us the sender's only claim to fame is an Irish, name. No Irish about that one but the name. We have to do a little research to learn the identity of our pal. Cards and greetings brought joy to us on the big day. Our only shock was in meeting Bob Adams. Not a sign of green on him. Something will have to be done about him in another year. Our MCHS freshman basketball team had a fine season and wound up with the second place trophy in tournament play. We are expecting some pictures to run with a summary. Our grade schools will be sending some real good boys to the freshman class next fall. Things may be looking up in COLORADO STATE U.
