Perry Fortress of the Daughters of the G.A.R. The DeKalb Swedes will provide the McHenry A.A. club basketball team with opposition next Sunday afternoon at the local gym. John Blake died early Wednesday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Thennes. Walter J. Walsh, the McHenry postmaster, was absent from his duties at the post office for several days owing to injuries received when he slipped and fell on the ice, injuring his knee. Birthdays are memorable events for small boys and girls and the one celebrated on Wednesday of last week by Master James Hess, son of Dr. and Mrs. Hess, was one that will long be remembered for the little host as well as the guests. Guests at this happy gathering were Betty Buss, Joe, James and Kathrine McAndrews, Frank Johnson, Eleanor Donavin, Herbert and Joan Reihansperger, Barbara Carey, Cynthia Erickson and Bobby Jackson. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 9, 1944) One of Chicago's best known pioneer architects, Charles Thisslew, passed away at St. Therese hospital, Waukegan, March 4, after an illness of only a week. Mr. Thisslew was a McHenry summer resident for twenty years. For the past twelve years the family has made their permanent home here in the Woodlawn Park area. An 8 lb. son, named Thomas Freund Antonson, was born on Feb. 29 at the Woodstock hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Leo-. nard Antonson. The little lad will celebrate few firthdays in future years due to his being a leap year baby. Among the outstanding scholars in the University of Illinois college of Fine and Applied arts l&st semester was Polly A. Kuby, West McHenry. Miss Kuby, a sophomore, had a scholastic average of 4?26 computed on a basis of 5 equalling perfect "A". Earl Paddock of Round Lake has moved intotheSteffes house on Washington street which he recently purchased. The former occupants, Mr. and Mrs^Mike Budler, are now residing in their new home on Park avenue known as the Diedrich place. Just a few weeks ago a Belgian police dog was sent from Labrador to make his home in McHenry. Now we have a dog belonging to a family in this vicinity leaving for sea. The dog belongs to Reginald Rix, Jr., son of the senior Reginald Rix, who resides near Johnsburg. Only a puppy, the terrier will leave soon from New York on one of Uncle Sam's ships of war to be the mascot of the crew of which his master is a member. Mrs. George Williams has been confined to her home this week after injuries to both knees suffered when she fell on the ice. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from "the files of Feb. 26, 1959) Charles J. Miller was reported recovering in McHenry hospital from injuries sustained when the truck he was driving was struck by a Chicago and North Western train at the Rt. 120 intersection on Waukegan road. He sustained a fractured leg and lacerations in the crash. Internal injuries required surgery. Melvin Walsh of Court street suffered a badly fractured leg when he was struck by a car while crossing a street in Waukegan's business district. Mary Ann Granger will be among the student nurses honored in a capping ceremony at St. Francis School of Nursing in Evanston Sunday, March 1. Mary Ann will be remembered as the county and state dairy princess of 1958. Mrs. Gussie Diedrich, community service chairman for the Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary, presented a nursing scholarship to Mary Lynn Murphy, 18, of Home avenue, McHenry, a 1958 M.C.H.S. graduate. Mrs. Irene Sexton of Freund avenuev a 43 year old mother of three children, died at Zion community hospital Feb. 23, after an illness of eight years. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Jensen entertained at a dinner party at their home on Waukegan street in honor of their son, Ted, who was a member of the confirmation class at St. Mary's church.
