The proud grandparents are Ed and Kay Druml and Mr. and Mrs. Don Carter of Clearwater, Fla. Our congratulations to the family on their newest arrival. STROLLING THROUGH THE PARK Guess what? We have news!! Now the big problem is to get in on time. Bill and Lillian Glosson are back from a two week vacation to Fort Worth and Mineral Springs, Texas, where they visited with Charlene and her husband, Bruce Peck. They had a great two weeks just relaxing and catching up on their visiting. On the way home they stopped in Salinas, Kansas, where they visited with Bruce's grandmother. A big welcome to Ron and Sally Glosson who are living at 5010 Shore Drive. A great spot to enjoy the coming summer Iwea the r. The annual dinner for the board members was held last, Saturday evening at a restaurant in Gurnee. Pat McCarthy was the hostess for a farewell coffee last Wednesday for Marge Dent who is moving to Chicago. Irene Koehl, Helen Strandquist and Rose Jorgenson were guests. Alma Siegmund, Helen Strandquist and Lyda Radisch are back after a five week vacation in Florida. The gals drove down with only a slight delay when Lyda broke her shoulder on the second day. This didn't stop them at all and they continued on to Miami where they had an apartment just five blocks from Hialeah racetrack. They visited with Wayne and Cathy Strandquist and family while in Miami and enjoyed boat rides on Biscayne Bay and travelled through the toys to Key West and through the Everglades. They visited with Alma's brother in Port Charlotte and went on up the West Coast to Venice where they visited Lyda's sister. They also spent some time in Sarasota and St. Petersburg and ended their journey in Clearwater where they visited with a friend of Helen's. The weather was gorgeous and they all got good sun tans, which added to their good time. They hit the big snow storm in Indiana on the way back so felt like winter all over again. Glad to say they brought some of the nice weather to us. Our very deepest sympathy is extended to Mary Laurence on the death of her mother last Friday. Burial services were held on Tuesday. Please don't forget to vote in the forthcoming elections. Township elections will be held on April 1 and city elections will be held on April 15. JOHNFUHLER REAL ESTATE Has a better buy for you! While this increase required no congressional action^ substantial criticism has been directed at the Congress for its "inaction" in permitting the automatic increase to become effective. Since the previous salary level was $30,000 per year, the raise amounts to 41 percent. However, if measured in terms of the congressional salary level which existed in 1865, it appears that the new salary level in not disproportionate to that of the salaries in private enterprise. It should be recalled that in 1962 the Congress established a procedure whereby salaries of most federal employees would be based on comparable payments to people doing the same type of work in private enterprise. Then, in 1967, it was decided that Executive, Legislative and Judicial salaries should be measured according to the same criterion. In the 1967 Act, provision was made for a Presidential commission to submit a report every fourth year recommending Executive, Legislative and Judicial salary levels. This commission, headed by Frederick R. Kappel, retired chairman of the board of American Telephone and Telegraph company, included eight other professional, governmental, academic, financial and labor representatives whose recommendations each four years would become effective unless rejected by either House of the Congress. Under the provisions of the law; the President is authorized to accept or scale down salaries as thus recommended. President Johnson accepted the commission's proposals with regard to Executive and Judicial salaries, but at the urging of many Congressmen, he scaled down the recommended salary of members of Congress from $50,000 per annum to the figure of $42,500. At the same time, the President approved the recommended salaries of $60,000 for Cabinet officers, $65,000 for Justices of the Supreme Court, and increases for other Executive and Judicial officers at figures substantially above those which were previously paid. Indeed, Cabinet officers' salaries were increased from $35.000 to $60,000. At about ACCEPT LATE REGISTRATIONS FOR V PROGRAMS The Lake Region YMCA is accepting late registrations for several of the adult programs that would be of interest to men and women. A drapery making course for women wflf begin on March 20 for eight Thursdays at the Crystal Lake Program center at 65 N. Williams street. The class will be conducted by Mrs. Elisabeth Blees. A knitting class for women has been scheduled for ten Wednesdays beginning March 19 at the Crystal Lake Program center. The class is limited to the first ten persons. Mrs. Dorothy Woertz is the instructor. Men and women are eligible to participate in the judo classes held at the Crystal Lake Community high school for ten Thursdays beginning March 20. An advanced judo instruction class is also planned, but it is by invitation only. Ralph W. Bergin, who has a second degree Black Belt, is the instructor. The response to the sewing class for women has been excellent. A waiting list has been started. A slipcover class for women is planned for eight Thursdays beginning on March 20 at the Crystal Lake Program center. Interested pfersons should choose a piece of furniture they want recovered. Mrs. Elisabeth Blees is the instructor. All late registrations should be directed to the Crystal Lake Program center, 65 N. Williams street, Crystal Lake. Persons wishing to register late will be accepted until the third meeting date of the program. the same time, the salary c the President of1 the Unite* States was doubled fror. $100,000 to $200,000. There is a basic disagree ment on the part of many Mem bers of the Congress regarding the manner in which these sal ary increases have been en acted. It has been the view t this member of Congress, a; well as many others, that con gressional salary levels shoul be established independently c Executive and Judicial salaries However, it is argued by th proponents of the legislatio which resulted in the Kappe commission that congressiona salary decisions should be take out of the hands of Congress and that for many years prio to 1967 Congressional salar. levels were far below thos. to which members of Congres were entitled. 9 One other difficulty that af fects Congressional salaries i: the recognized need to pay sal aries to persons attracted t> positions in the Executivi branch which are comparabli to those paid in private industry As it turns out, congressional salaries are still below the level of those, paid to Assistan Secretaries and other lowei level officials in the Executivt branch. It is quite doubtful tha the Congress, or any commission created by it, woult downgrade Congressional salaries below that which has beer done, while Executive branch salaries rise to attract highly qualified personnel. There may be some consolation in this assurance froiT Congressman Morris K. Udali of Arizona, chief sponsor o the 1967 Salary Reform Ac under which the recent in creases were established. Con gressman Udall has declared " in all probability no in crease of such proportions a.' this will every again be nec essary. Released from a sys tem which allowed only si pay increases in 104 years congressional pay can b adjusted in small amounts a: changes in our economy war rant." Selective Service Set out below are questions frequently asked of the Selective Service System along witl appropriate answers. Your cooperation in printing or announcing these will be in the public interest. Q.: My neighbor's son, ai outstanding athlete, has not beei inducted. He claims he is no physically qualified. Howdoyoi explain this? A.: Selective Service loca boards determine the availability of registrants for military serve while the Armec Forces at the Armed Forces Examining and Entrance Stations determine their acceptability for military service under standards prescribed bj the Secretary of Defense. Q.: How may I get on the list to regularly receive the newspaper issued by National Headquarters entitled "Selective Service"? A.: Send your check or money order for $1.00 to the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402, with a letter requesting an annual subscription to SELECTIVE SERVICE.. Q.: It is my understanding that there are two different classifications given to those who are not acceptable for service. I know one is IV-F but what is the other one, and what is the difference between the two? A.: The two classifications you reiferenced are I-Y and IV-F. Registrants found to be not currently qualified for service but who would be qualified in time of war or national emergency declared by Congress are classified in Class I-Y. In Class IV-F are placed those registrants who are found to be not qualified for any service in the Armed Forces either currently or in time of war or national emergency declared by the Congress. /
