Ben Hutson passed away at her home in Woodstock, Feb. 28, after an extended illness. She was a former resident of this city. Miss Arlene Harrison entertained the members of her card club at her home on Main street Thursday evening. Three tables of cards were in play and the high honors were won by Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Olsen. James Walsh is a new assistant in the McHenry post office this week. The Kloeckner family are new tenants on the old Mead farm owned by F.H. Wattles. Mrs. J.A. Street has completed her work at the Victory Memorial hospital at Waukegan and is now with her husband, Dr. J.A. Street, in this city. The pupils and teacher, Mr. Berg, of the Fort Hill school , heard the inauguration of President Hoover over the radio at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Bacon. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the flies of March 9, 1944) Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Thonneson, operators of the McHenry Tent and Awning company, received letters from two boys in service overseas saying they were putting up a tent today and happened to look up at the name and there it was as big .as could be one of their tents. Announcements have been received of the marriage on Feb. 5 of Shirley L. Butler, A.M./M. 3/C, U.S. WAVES and Lt. Thomas E. Bressmer, U.S.N.C. The nuptial ceremony was performed at the First Episcopal church in St. Louis, Mo. William Meyers, a retired Chicago merchant who had made his home during the summer months, passed away at his home in the city March 3. He had been in poor health for many months. The conference of the Illinois P.T.A. was held in the grand ballroom of the Stevens hotel recently and was attended among others by the members of the Lily Lake P.T.A. Hattie Reikow of Chicago spent a few days last week in the Robert Thompson home. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 26, 1959) Mr. and Mrs. Louis Pedecone of Huntersville Park were crossing the Main street crossing when their car was hit by the 7 o'clock morning train. They suffered severe bruises and shock. In observance of F.F.A. week members of the McHenry chapter of the Future Farmers of America will hold their sixteenth annual banquet Feb. 26. In a marriage ceremony which took place Feb. 21 in the Community Methodist church, Miss Sandra Schopp of McHenry Shores became the bride of Mr. Guy Ambrose of McHenry. Rev. George Martin officiated at the ceremony. The name of "Kachina" was decided upon for the north half of Neighborhood 7 of Girl Scouts at a meeting held at the Richmond community church. "Kachina" means little doll. Mrs. Ruth Kaczmark, 63, a resident of Country Club subdivision died at the Villa Nursing home Feb. 19. Guy White attended the fortyfirst annual convention of the National Association of Retail Clothiers and Furnishers in Chicago this past week. Eleven employees of the Illinois Bell Telephone company residing in northwest Chicago and suburb's including two from M;Henry are celebrating service anniversaries and have a combined total of 400 years on the job. Walter A. Sheahan of Lakeland Park, communications maintenance worker, has been with Illinois Bell fortyfive years. Included among those with thirty-five year records is Robert MacClure also of the McHenry comti inity. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 14,1929) Miss Lucille Steffes entertained the girls of the J.J.C. club at a party at her home Saturday in honor of her birthday anniversary. Delicious refreshments were served with decorations prevailing in|jreen, in keeping with St. Patrick's day. Miss Winnie Bylsma was united in marriage to Mr. William Westermayer in Chicago March 6. Saturday, March 16, the Central Market will put on a big sale, including Honey Brand hams and bacons. A demonstration will be on all day and in the evening when sandwiches will be served free. About eighty members were present including twenty-seven charter members and six past oracles. Riverview camp was organized on March 9, 1911 by Mrs. Agnes Wentworth. At a joint meeting of the Kiwanis club and Izaak Walton League committed, a combined association of two bodies was formed, which will be known as the Kiwalton Association. The purpose of this new association will be to promote the publicity and put on an advertising campaign for McHenry and vicinity and the Fox River Valley and to raise funds to meet the Outdoor Life Exposition to be held at the Coliseum in Chicago on May 6 to 11. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 16, 1944) The proud possessor of his Navy wings of gold is Leroy Hettermann of Johnsburg, who enjoyed a few days visiting friends and relatives here last week following his graduation as a flyer and his commission as ensign. Earl Bower, Richmond postmaster for many years, died at his home March 12, after an illness of several weeks. Once a year the honor of being hosts to the county Legion meeting falls to the McHenry post at which time all present Legionnaires and also discharged men of this war are invited to attend. L.R. Benston department service officer of the American Legion from Chicago will be the guest speaker at the County council meeting March 23. Two McHenry men were injured seriously in an auto accident. They had gotten off the train at Cary after spending the day in Chicago and were driving home when their car was struck by another one. The men were John C. Schmidt and Robert Knox. Mr. Knox was suffering with a broken leg, broken nose, cuts ahout the face and injuries to his hand and Mr. Schmidt was suffering from possible leg and rib fractures and facial cuts. Miss Laura Weber, Mrs. Helen Heuser and daughter, Dorothy, were Chicago callers on Saturday where they made their first donation to the blood bank. Mr. and Mrs. James Wiser are the parents of a 7 lb. 6 oz.„ son born March 13**at the Woodstock hospital. TEN YEARS AGO v (Taken from the files of March 5, 1959) A comparatively light vote of 260 votes found a $78,500 school building bond program for Harrison school at Wonder Lake approved. A total of 144 votes were in favor of the proposed structure and 112 were opposed and four spoiled. Herbert Harrison of McHenry has been elected president of the McHenry County Board of Realtors, succeeding James Connell. The congregation of Faith Presbyterian church is completing plans to move into its first church home, a one story structure. The building will consist of a 125 seat sanctuary. Under the direction of Mrs. Hugh Locker of McHenry an eight voice choir enhances the service -of worship each Sunday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith are the parents of a boy born Feb. 27 at Memorial hospital. YMiss Mary Banks was hostess at a surprise birthday party held last Friday evening honoring Miss Joy Mangold on her twenty-first birthday anniversary. The Mangold home was decorated in keeping with Hawaiian theme and each guest was presented with an orchid corsage flown from Hawaii. Mr. and Mrs. James Jackson and son have moved from one of the former Wattles apartments on Main street to Woodstock. Mrs. Theresa Neiss, 65, a lifelong resident of the McHenry community died March 1. Due to the increasing enrollment of, the Johnsburg Public school the board of education is planning on adding eight classrooms, kitchen, washrooms, office, multi-purpose, luncheon and teachers' rooms. HERE AND THERE IN BUSINESS ENTERS NEW BUSINESS Donald Howard, until recently manager of Gem Cleaners, Elm street, soon will open his own dry cleaning establishment, Mr. Don's One-Hour Cleaners oh Third street, in a building nov under construction.
