PG. 10 - PLAINDEALER -WED. APRIL 2, 1969 I T)he %i)ottig I I d--J r? inic Mary's mother shows the formula for longer life! Young people extrovert their attention upon external reality. But far too many oldsters become introverts and thus focus upon their "innards." This makes them develop ^negative thoughts till they become "Worry Warts," always demanding prunes and bran flakes for breakfast! By - George W. Crane, Ph.D., M.D. CASE J-558: Mary Reynolds is a vivacious farm wife living near our summer home in Indiana. "My mother is now past 94," she told Mrs. Crane. "But for the past several years she has been staying with an elderly woman to serve as companion and practical-nurse. "She gets paid $25 every week and faithfully deposits her check in the bank, for she is proud of her growing bank account. "And she remains alert, with a great zest for life. "Don't you think that is due to her thinking forward into the future, instead of living in the past?" A TEST OF AGE Yes;. Emerson said the test of our age is determined by where we dwell in our thoughts. If we are thinking forward into the tomorrows, then we are young, although we may have had as many birthdays as Mary Reynold's mother. On the contrary, if we are" constantly dwelling among the tombstones of the yesteryears, then we are old, though we may be only a college youth, brooding over last summer's jilted romance. A corollary to Emerson's yardstick for determining age, might also be whether we are "Worry Warts" about our health. Young people turn their interest upon outside sounds, sights and actions. A fire truck thus preempts the attention of a schoolboy (and many adults, too). Baseball, basketball, football, skating, tennis, movie dates and hikes, picnics -these monopolize the interest of teenagers. Young people thus extrovert their attention upon external reality. Alas, oldsters growintrovertive and begin to focus upon ISIOOO Nina imps their "innards." Basketball, track and football may usurp the attention of youth. But the favorite sport of those past the age of 60 is "jumping" to negative diagnoses of their health! For they look at themselves in the bathroom mirror every morning as they take a mental inventory of their internal organs! "How's my heiart?" they silently start their layman's medical inventory. "And what about my liver, kidneys, stomach, lungs, plus my transverse colon and rectum?" By this time they are likely to feel some minor twinge that extroverted youth would never notice. It may be only a gas bubble percolating along the transverse colon. So the oldsters then "jump" to a hasty diagnosis and think, "Fve got cancer." Even if a doctor disproves this negative thought, they continue fixating their attention on their innards. At a cafeteria, for example, which age group is more likely to take a dish of prunes or a glass of prune juice for breakfast! You know it is the oldsters, for thousands of them have a "bowel complex," and either demand epsom salts several times per week or are devotees of prunes and bran flakes for breakfast! So try to externalize your attention, if you wish to live longer and more zestful lives. Develop outdoor hobbies. Attend church faithfully. Get "steamed up" about politics instead of your arthritis and constipation!
