PG. 8 - PLAINDEALER - FRI. APRIL 4, 1969 Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 21, 1929) Eight members. of the Mc- Henry Epworth League went to Woodstock Friday evening at which time they attended a rally of the McHenry county subdistrict Epworth League held at the M.E. church, McHenry, Woodstock and Harvard contributed several on the program. Those given by the local league included a vocal solo by Rev. Bonham, a cornet solo by Eugene Sayler and a vocal solo by Bob Peterson with Miss Ida Reynolds as accompanist. Fred Beller and John Schaefer returned Sunday afternoon via motor from California. They -made the cross country run in six and one half days. The distance travellec registered 2,747 miles. New equipment is being installed for the opening of the Central barber shop conducted by Messrs. Kircher and Dreymiller in the Hunter building. The worthy matron, Miss Arline Harrison, of McHenry Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, will act as worthy matron during the initiatory work at Bethel Chapter, Elgin, Friday evening at which time her sisterin- law will be initiated. The general science classes of the community high school visited the Haeger pottery works at Dundee and the Terra Cotta factory. They were accompanied by their instructors, , Mr. Willis and Miss Kortendick. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 23, 1944) Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Antonson and children are moving from the Wolff apartments to the Stoffel place on Main street vacated by the Malcolm Mclntyres. Floyd Covalt, Jr., arrived in McHenry the first of the week from Jefferson Barracks, Mo,, being called here by the critical illness of his father. Eugene R. Leisner, 69, a modeler for the Terra Cotta plant for many years, died at his home south of McHenry March 18. Guests in the home of Mr. $nd Mrs. WinGeld Pietsch of McCullom Lake over the weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Sather ^nd Miss Jean Utter of Chicago, Mrs. L Su Beck and Mrs. Harvey Narr of Minneapolis, Minn. Albert Vales returned to his McHenry home after several weeks spent in a Chicago hospital. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 12, 1959). A heart attack was blamed in the unexpected death March 7 of Stephen Zriny, 45, who collapsed following a meeting at the Trolex company on Elm street. The Zriny family moved to McHenry ten years ago when he came here as plant superintendent of the Admiral company for whom he had worked twenty-ttoo years. A long period of poor health ended in the death March 6 in Children's Memorial hospital in Chicago of Lee Fuhrer, 11 years old, of Wonder Lake. Ethel Quaintance of Johnsburg and Arthur McKiel of Lake Villa were married March 7 by Rev. Fr. Lynch at Lake Villa's Prince of Peace church. # Athletic Director L. Mc- Cracken has announced that McHenry Community high school will have track and field this spring. It will be the first time since before World War II that the Warriors have fielded a track team. BW SCOUT *k NEWS TROOP 131 April Fool's Joke!! No, it really is a column this week. Sorry that I had to miss a couple of weeks, but as I mentioned earlier, I can't always attend the meetings and it is up to the Scribes to furnish me with the information or I have nothing to write about. Now that we are in the groove again, here's the "dope".-April 12 is the big conservation campout. The conservation part is the annual Tree Planting project prescribed by the Blackhawk Area council. Several sites have already been selected but I haven't heard what site has been assigned to us. Be sure to attend next meeting so you can find out where, when, who, how many and so on. Then, the campout follows. Why doScouts go camping? "Camping -knowhow" is the theme for April and I think you will find it interesting and informative to know why Scouts go camping. Camping is fun and fellowship and when you have the "camping know-how" it's even more fun. So,- go camping and . discover for yourselves the answer to why Boy Scouts go camping. April 19 is not too far away either. This is the date set for Scout-O-Rama. It is to be held in McHenry ths year at the McHenry Junior high school so let's get out and sell those tickets. We have wonderful support from our good citizens in McHenry but they can't buy your tickets to see for themselves what goes on in scouting if you don't get out arid make them available. Sell Tickets. Our booth will be all about firearms, from BB-guns to shotguns. Be sure you know what to answer when someone asks you a question in general or about a gun in particular on how it works to safety. That's about all this time. . Remember, keep the information coming in so we can keep the column going. Tom Russell, Public Relations.
