The" compulsive gambler' 'is - as emotionally as the compulsive drinker, the compulsive addict, and the compulsive "chaser". The best as well as the worst of men have been afflicted by the "gambling mania", according to an extensive study made by Doctors Darrell W. Bolen and William H. Boyd of the Neuropsychiatric Institute in Los Angeles. Famous creators such as Feodor Dostoevsky and Richard Wagner were wellknown gamblers. And of cour ^ there is the famous English nobleman who refused to leave the gaming tables and had his food brought to him, thus bequeathing his name -- The Earl of Sandwich -- to the unique method his food was served. How does one define the "compulsive gambler"? First of all, like all gamblers, he typically and frequently takes chances; also, games of chance consume the majority of his interests, activities and fantasies; in addition, he is full of optimism and fails to profit or learn from his defeats. In defying the laws of logic and probability, the compulsive gambler doggedly refuses to believe that his persistence will fail to be rewarded. He is unable to stop while winning, and he usually finds it more difficult to stop while losing. Most unfortunately, this type of gambler eventually bets and risks excessive amounts of money. v The compulsive gambler moves through a series of emotions. Depression after losing and elation or euphoria after winning are common and frequently are of a magnitude inappropriate to the amount won or lost. His emotional alterations during gambling are unique and are definitely one of the' factors related to his "illness". This series of moods "There is a Difference When You Plant Flowerwood Grown FRUIT TREES DWARF and REGULAR $#50 » Your Choice 6 and up Choose from: APPLE -- PEAR -- CHERRY PEACH -- PLUM -- APRICOT COMPARE and SAVE Mi FRESHLY DUG SUGAR MAPLE • RED NORWAY MAPLE • PIN OAK LOCUST • WILLOW Flowerwood Is So Easy To Drive T< OPEN SI OPEN DAILY AND SUNDAYS TIL 5:00 in MtfgiENfer W000STOCK MMVMGO CWSTM- IAKE ALGONQUIN QUNDCC ELGIN. cwerwoc J Crystal Lake Route 14 at 176 Phone 815-459-6200 Illinois WE DELIVER! includes anxiety, dread and anticipation with subsequent release into joy or disappointment, depending upon the outcome of his bet. Psychiatric case histories show that the compulsive gambler begins his (or her) expensive wagering after suffering a major stress or crisis. An occasional or "social" gambler, he suffers some sort of crisis -- often marital difficulty -- and then begins to overindulge. The pathological gambler seldom seeks psychiatric treatment solely for his gambling difficulties, and typically, he < denies that he needs assistance for his gambling problem. Usually, the psychiatrist makes his professional entrance at the request of legal authorities or because of the desperate pleas of baffled or disgruntled mates or relatives. When the gambler seeks psychiatric treatment at his own request his cdmplaint is usually something else: thoughts of suicide, impotence, marital problems, etc. Treating a compulsive gambler through psychotherapy is a loqg, arduous procedure, because often the patient suffers relapses. However, when psychotherapy is combined with the patient's membership in an organization such as the recentlyformed "Gamblers Annonymous," benefits to the gambler are much more evident. What Alcoholics Amnotiymous has done forthe alcoholic, Gamblers Annonymous has done for many compulsive gamblers. In this organization, he rubs shoulders with his fellows who have gone through the same often-degrading aspects of gambling that he has. In psychiatric terms the compulsive gambler is given the opportunity to relieve his guilt by admitting the excessive extent to which he has gambled and indulged in his own illness. Just as the alcoholic must at some time confess that his "pleasure" is an illness, so must the compulsive gambler -- and then he must seek the means to recover from that illness. Wed.
