The Warriors play a doubly header against Grant at Fox Lake tomorrow. Game time is 10:30 a.m. PLAIXDEALER PHOTO by Bert Hagemann For the first time in my seven years here at McHenry, the baseball Warriors dropped their opener of the season. The hard hitting Mustangs of Mundelein mauled Warrior pitching for ten hits and nine runs in the seven inning contest which saw the home squad on the long end of the 9-J winning margin. The Warriors broke first out of the gate, scoring three runs in the second inning, on the basis of a' walk, a triple by Tom Hurckes, and a run producing single by left fielder Judd Decker. The Mustangs, however, came back with two in their half of the inning, one in the third, and then four in the fourth to take a commanding lead of 7-3. The Warriors scrapped back however, scoring two runs in the sixth with the aid of two walks and a double by Mark Camasta. The seventh also saw another rally fall just short as we tallied two more runs off the third Mundelein hurler. T. Janik P 2 0 1 Certainly our hitting was exM. You probably read the letter Don Hoenes wrote inviting us to use your ticket to the Cubs' opening game. By golly, we accepted the kind invitation and really had a whing ding. Several car loads of Cub fans and one White Sox fan (a lonely little petunia) gathered at Don's (the popular Riverside Dnive beverage dispenser) Tuesday morning to tune up for our cheerleading. At the appointed hour, Don cranked iq? the machine (as we cabled those go-buggies in Abner Doubleday's time) and headed its nose toward Wrigley Field. Your father (that Yankee fan) was one of the riders in Don's car. Your brother, Jon, was in another group. He takes up quite a bit of room. He's jogging these days -- jogging toward your Mom's table. Mr. Wrigley doesn't have much parking space provided, but we finally found a place under the tracks. It's nothing like Sox Park with that spacious parking area. We climbed close to heaven and those nine Cub fans in our group thought maybe they had reached the pearly gates. Oh, they were in heaven! Those Cub fans surrounding our crowd were great. When the band was introduced, they booedL When the umps were introduced, they booed. When the Phillies were introduced, they ' let 'em have it. But, when those Cubs were introduced --Wow: They love their heroes. Guess we forgot to mention the Cubs won the ball game in the eleventh inning on Willie Smith's pinch hit homer. Of course, F.rnie Banks won it for Spcrts Editor them with two home runs and five runs batted in before Manager Durocher and Fergie Jenkins let it slip away. Give A1 Lopez five runs and he'll win it in regulation time. He isn't much used to the extravagances of five runs. That fellow Jenkins seemed to work a little harder when trouble loomed. He really can whip that ball over when he has a mind to let fly. They had a crowd of over 40,000 at the game and now have a Little extra cash to run the net up to the second deck. A few foul balls were going over the net. Well, let's get down to the ball game. It was a doozy. You won't be seeing a more thrilling one all season. That kid named Money, who plays shortstop for the Phillies looks like Rookie of the Year. His first name will be Money and second name Bags when he signs another contract. When his double sent his team ahead in the eleventh inning, we started pulling for the Cubs. 1 Couldn't stand the thought of riding home with a bunch of mourners. Ernie Banks was great. He must have more oomph on his swing than one can detect. With that easy swing he lofted the ball over the left field wall for five runs. He's the same Ernie who was slated for a coaching job there years ago by Leo Durocher. Ernie is really "Mr. Cub" and can do no wrong. When • a high foul fly hit him on the chest and rolled to the ground there wasn't a stir in the park. They don't boo old Ern. As a remembranc e of a great day, we had the fellows in our group autograph a paper for our scrap book. Our list shows '•Ernie Banks", Don Hoenes, Stan Pollitt, Harry Neumann, ft GALA EVENT 10th ANNUAL Las Vegas N 9 3 as vegas night Holiday House -- Ingleside, APRIL 19, 1969 Sponsored by HI. Fred J. Meyer, Harold Blake, Jim Geier, R. Grom ("R" for Robert1, but we should really give him another name after his remarks about our beloved White Sox), Bud Borrelli, and Chuck Gies. A couplr of nice young boys, Andrew Borrelli and Dave Dalton, were also in the crowd. They let us know the Sox are "no good". Bet they were taught to say Cubs from the time they could say Mommy and Daddy. Which reminds us. While we attended the game our 19-month old grandson visited the Edward Blake house and was taught to say "Ernie Banks". How are we going to get that boy in the right league with that kind of influence. Well, Dave, this should give you some idea of our day. For one Sox fan to join that group seemed to make "The Perils of Pauline" seem mild by comparison. We expected to see the vines in beautiful Wrigley Field sprayed green. Looked drab. The bleacher section in center field, which is closed to help the hitter, was really green. Guess they did that for St. Patrick's Day. When we arrived for work Wednesday morning, we found cut out banners on our door with the wording "Hey! - Hey! - Cubs!". It looked like an inside job, Dave, with your Dad one of the insiders. He looked guilty. Don Hoenes was the perfect host, making every part of our day enjoyable. He is also a good driver so there wasn't a nerve in the car load. Write again, Dave. Just see what your letter did for us. Yours, "S. I. H." Northern lllini Bowmen The Mohawk Warriors headed by archery maiden, Betty Houser, were the indoor team to cop the Northern lllini Bowmen indoor championship. The Mohawks were honored at a banquet at the Port-O-Call in McHenry followed by presentation of awards to the team members by Cal Houser. Lee Kiltz, Hank Merz, Jeff Raven and Betty Houser received specially designed plaques. At the last indoor shoot Hank Merz put a sight on his bow and proceeded to shoot a perfect score on the Flint round. This really helped to put the Mohawks out ahead of the other teams. Ten new members were welcomed to Northern lllini Bowmen: Mr. and Mrs. Merlyn Schneiderman, George Sommers and Leah Way of Woodstock; Mr. and Mrs. Marcus Engelhardt of Wonder Lake; Jim Timmer of Crystal Lake; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Isbell and A1 Cameron of Chicago. President, Joe Raven appointed Jim Zavodny to the newly established post of Bowhunting Coordinator. This will include keeping the club informed on legislation on conservation and bowhunting rules and reg- C Chain O'Lakes Boat Club GAMES WITH PLAY MONEY - PRIZES DANCING TO LIVE MUSIC "TICKETS AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR ; 8:30 til ??? PLAINDEALER PHOTO Warrior Nine Beats Trojans Of Cary Grove In 5-3 Game FLASH - -- Thursday morning dawns and a beautiful Cub banner is posted in front of pur office. The signs stay up until the Cubs lose a game. What if they win 10 straight? What a horrible thought. Mary Etten phoned to let us know that Joe's nephew, Jack Brown, holds a 1-pin lead in the Peterson C lassics where the good bowlers shoot for the big money. We'll be watching him. If there is anything else, we can't remember. This is some week! by Bert Hagemann Diminutive Mike Carlson marched out to the mound with the tying runs in scoring position and squelched a last ditch rally by Cary Grove this past Tuesday to give the orange and black their first win of this young 1969 baseball season. With the darkness closing in, in the top half of the sixth inning, Carlson fanned the number three and four hitters in the Trojan lineup to cap a good performance by the McHenry nine. Don Reinboldt had gone four strong innings prior to the last minute heroics, striking out eight Trojans and walking four in his initial mound outing for the season. His mates had given him a three run cushion on the strength of a two run triple by Steve Rohrer in the second inning, and a single tally in the fourth. The final Warrior runs came in the fifth when Hurckes reached on an error and Camasta bunted for a fielder's choice. Both runners were moved up on Mike Janik's sacrifice, and scored when Tom Janik drilled a one hopper through the shortstop's legs for a two run error. Scott Nickels had an easy fifth inning in relief, but ran into control problems in the sixth before being relieved by Carlson for the final outs. The story of the victory can be told in terms of a yield of only two hits by the Warrior moundsmen, and key clutch hits by the middle of the Warrior line-up. We improved somewhat from Monday in cutting down 6n our mental miscues, but we still are not as sharp as we should be i With more nonconference tilts scheduled for this week and a break in the weather perhaps we can get the wounded members of the squad healed and achieve the final tuning up for the North Suburban race which opens this coming week.
