April 16, 1969 HOLIDAY HILLS NEWS INEZ YOKING 885-4672 Twicer Told Tales LOCAL SCOUTS TAKE PART IN SCOUT-O-RAMA It's Scout-O-Rama time again and again we ask you to cooperate with the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts when they knock at your door selling tickets. It is one way fbr both troop and pack to earn money for their units as 50 percent of the profits from the tickets sales go into their own treasury. Scout-O-Rama this year will be held at the McHenry Junior high school on April 19, so mark your calendar and come out and see what the boys from Holiday Hills have accomplished. Awards will be given to the best booths. The Holiday Hills Pack 458, sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary Post 4600-VFW will have a booth on Alaska and Holiday Hills Troop 132, sponsored by the Griswold Lake Athletic club, will have a booth featuring archery. Cub Scout pack 458 had their Pack meeting Friday night, March 28 at the VFW Hall in McHenry. The opening was held by the Webelos Den leading the Pledge of Allegiance. The families of David Halcom and • Christopher Ritthaler were welcomed into the Pack by John Connell, Cubmaster. Jack Emerson conducted a "Parent-Son 'Peanut Race* and a good time was had by all. Mr. Connell and Mr. Emerson gave out the following awards; David Halcom, Bobcat pin, Christopher Ritthaler, Bobcat pin, Waily Foreman, one year pin, Ricky Connell, one year pin, Tim Hughes, one year pin, Tom Hughes, one year pin, Paul Arena, assistant denners badge and one year pin, John Emerson, two year pin, Billy Mahon, two year pin, and Johnny Boettcher, two year pin. The theme for the month was Indian Lore and the boys worked very hard making head bands, wrist bands, breechcloths, rattles, tomahawks and drums. Pat Hughes den put on an exciting 'rain dance' for the skit. A Cub Scout song closed the meeting and cake and coffee donated by Helen Boettcher and Abbie Emerson was served to all. GABRIELS WIN TRIP Dot and Don Gabriel enjoyed a fabulous vacation which Don won through his place of employment. Dot and Don spent 10 days in San Juan, Puerto Rico, along with several other couples and' all had their children join them the last week of their stay. CLEAN-UP DAY Three cheers for all who helped in the recent clean-up day here in Holiday Hills. The Boy Scouts spent the day before the clean-up going through all the empty fields and putting the refuse at the side of the road for pick-up. Helpers on Clean-Up Day were Wally and Steve Stanchuk, Bill Mahon, Con Kasprzyk, Don Dolatowski, Bob Szamlewski and sons, Jim and Joe, A1 Ahlgrim, Dennis Kosup, Ron Wegener, Chuck Heise, Dan Hampton, Ralph Smith, Bill Exline and Bud Roth. Johnson, president of the McHenry chapter of the Izack Walton League, informs the Plaindealer that the first of five car loads of fish is expected to arrive here this week from the state hatcheries to be dumped into Fox River and the nearby lakes, including McCullom Lake. This is as- ' sured by Senator Ray Paddock and Representative Lyons of this district. A cinder track, one,eighth of a mile in circumference, has been made at the north end of the high school grounds and is now in use. About twenty high school athletes are scheduled to appear on the track team at the community high school this spring. A small percentage of the voters went to the polls in McHenry township on Tuesday to cast their ballots. There was a total of 139 ballots. McHenry Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, will hold a public bazaar, card party and cafeteria supper April 11. Useful and fancy articles will be on sale. The menu for the cafeteria supper will be chop suey, baked ham, mashed potatoes, cabbage salad, baked beans, brown bread, rolls, coffee, pickles, pie and cake. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 6, 1944) Mrs. Barbara Huemann, wife of Jacob Huemann of Johnsburg, died April 5, after a week's illhess. Roland McCannon, county superintendent of schools, issued certificate awards to three county youths, winners in a state essay contest. First prize winner was Margaret Bolger of McHenry. The awards signed by Governor Green were the result of a state essay contest for seventh and eighth grade students on the subject, "Commemorating the 125thanniversary of Illinois as a state." Beginning last Saturday, April 1, and with today's issue April 6 the Harvard Herald, founded in 1887 by the late M.F. Walsh, is under new ownership and editorship. It is now owned by A.E. Nye of McHenry and son, Lowell, the latter has been employed at Royal Oak, Mich., for some time. Arriving with Uncle Sam's army troops on North African soil within the past two weeks was Pvt. Donald Schaefer of West McHenry. Last Sunday local girls made their regular monthly trip to Camp Grant to entertain the convalescent soldiers. They found George Nett to be in the hospital. He js reported much improved and will soon be able to be about again. Miss Marie Powers is taking over the management of a National Tea store at Aurora for the next few weeks. Mrs. George Stilling has been, spending the past few weeks in Jacksonville, Fla., visiting her son, Bob, who is stationed there with the Marines. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of March 26, 1959) Prof. Guy Duker, assistant to the director of bands at the University of Illinois, will lead the Qlini Jubilee band at the sixty-ninth anniversary concerts on April 1 and 2 at the university auditorium. The former McHenry man also will conduct the concert band on a tour to Galesburg, Geneseo, Lake Zurich and Streator. Firemen were called to the G*T. Snively residence in McHenry Shores Friday noon and were responsible for keeping flames confined to the garage and one room of the house. The community joins the Charles J. Hollenbacks, Cooney Heights, in mourning the untimely death of their infant son, Timothy J., 2 months olg, who was found dead in his crib, March 21. Death was.attributed to suffocation.
