APRIL 16, 1969 - PLAINDEALER - PG. 3 Mrs. Frank Gregory, McHenry, member of the McHenry county chapter of the American Cancer society, displays a challenging poster, part of the 1969 Cancer Crusade informational material. Cancer Crusade in McHenry county picks up full momentum starting this weekend. Your check will help the fight by making a contribution. Your checkup by, a doctor will help you personally by taking this preventive step. te DON PEASLEY PHOTO An army of more than 500 volunteers goes into action in McHenry county this weekend in full-scale execution of Operation Cancer Crusade. Some townships have been in action already, but David Ladd, county chairman, reports the major thrust begins now and continues the final fifteen days of April, officially designated Cancer Crusade Month. The fight against cancer is carried out in many ways - through research, educational programs for lay people, information programs for professional people as doctors and specialists, and constant reminders on the dangers involved in smoking cigarettes. Theme this year catches the idea behind this Cancer Crusade, Ladd said today, "Help yourself with a checkup and others with a check" is the slogan. Ladd noted the importance of the physical checkup regularly. "While it is true that one in three is saved from cancer to- day, it is also true that one out of every two could be saved with a checkup at the first indication of what could be cancer," he asserted. In 1969 about 100,000persons died who might have been saved by earlier and proper treatment. This Cancer Crusade is stimulated by hope-hope generated by the knowledge that the seven danger signals serve as a guideline to spot early signs of cancer and knowledge that regular physical checkups will serve as a way to spot the disease. Ladd calls it a two-wav parlay: "Regular checkups combined with a keen awareness of cancer's warning signals will cut the death toll from cancer tremendously." When the volunteer worker knocks on your door, accept the literature he's handing out gratefully. If you can make a contribution, he'll appreciate your donation in this fight that knows no boundaries in those who could become cancer victims. Goal this year in McHenry county is "mighty big", Ladd asserted. "Last year we collected over $23,000. To hurry the battle and help more with the research efforts, as well as to improve our patient services and our pwn chapter program, we have a 1969 goal of $25,000. You can restore it to usable consistency by the addition of a little nail-polish remover. " , Q. How can I, when working with plaster ^of-paris, prevent it from hardening too quickly? A. By using glycerin or vinegar as your mixing agent, instead of the usual water. Q. What can I do when egg whites refuse to beat stiff? A. Add a teaspoon of cold water and a pinch of salt. Adding a pinch of baking soda while beating also helps, makes it more fluffy, and also prevents its falling if it must stand for any length of time. Q. Please suggest a good, general stain-remover for porcelain sinks and bathtubs. N A. First rub the stained areas with a slice of lemon, then go over them carefully with a kerosene- dampened cloth. Or, dip a half-lemon into borax, and scour with this. Q. How can I repair tears or open seams in cellophane? A. Overlap the edges of cellophane, and press with a medium- warm iron until the edges are securely welded together. Q. How can I remedy scratches in a shellacked surface? A.
