WHISPERING .OAKS Gertrude Disney flSR-7515 1 LOCAL COUPLES RETURN FROM HAWAIIAN TRIP Mr. and Mrs. Conrad of Hanley Drive and Mr. and Mrs. Harry' Symonds of Sussex left O'Hare March 23 for an Hawaiian vacation. Mrs. Conrad said that was her life dream come true. They stopped at Oakland, Calif., to refuel. -Landing in "Hilo" was the starting off place on an Hawaiian tour of three Islands, each of which were delightful arid different. From "Hilo" by bus across the lava beds and a visit to the volcanoes, still Active and belching smoke, they ireached "Kona", a heaven on 'earth, compared to the lava,, ruined area they passed through. Several days later on to the .Island of "Maiu", greener and 'even more beautiful, passing .through ,an area that was ruinby a tidal wave, one is reinded that possible catastrophe is ever present on these I Islands. The old whaling town of "Lahairia" with its whaling ship and ancient saloon, have itfany small shops selling the same things and everywhere flowers, also the largest Banyan tree. Watching out to sea, one could see a whale blow and turn over to rise again, miles away, all ; very interesting to a midwest - ! erner. They said that most of their party of 250 thought "Moui" the most beautiful Is- • land. Their next stops were "Oahu" and Honolulu, and a week of sight seeing from Pearl -Harbor to Rain Forest, sugar plantations, pineapple canneries and performing whales at Sea Lion park. Honolulu has many fine hotels, buildings unlike any on the main land, and many more under construction, proving the tourist trade is flourishing. It was a new experience, to eat breakfast on the veranda, papya or some other exotic fruit to whet the appetite and watch the surfers riding the waves, palms waving in the breeze and , everywhere lush foliage and orchids. One had the wish to be capable of placing it on canvas. The Symonds are ready to J) go again and maybe they will try it. An old Hawaiian told some- ' thing of the Islands of Molakai, where the victims of Hansen disease lived. He said the children were taken from the parents and raised elsewhere, so the parents raised dogs, because as he said, they must , have something to love. It was a wonderful vacation, with a lot \ of wonderful people, and many • friendships have resulted. PLANTS TREES" . Fritz Quanstrum just planted another flowering tree, a Redbud on his hillside back slope. Good neighbor Jack Sauter came over to help with the last details and put his good luck charm on it. It should grow very well with such good woodsmen as Fritz and Jack?
