Twice Told Tales % *t--r -k "*w' VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS OF LOYALTY DAY -- General George Washington, praying at Valley Forge for divine help against the enemies of freedom, symbolizes the theme of Loyalty Day which will be celebrated on or near May 1, 1969 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary in McHenry and across the country. Parades, flag ceremonies and public speakers will emphasize God, Flag and Country dedication to American freedom ideals and our united action against all subversive influences. "Serving Nation" is the Loyalty Day theme for May 1. Service to country and Arm determination to safeguard American Freedoms -- these are the citizenship responsibilities to be emphasized through 1969 Loyalty Day observance. Loyalty Day on May 1 has been designated by Congress and by the President as the special occasion when everyone is to declare his citizenship responsiblity. Once again the Fox River V.F.W. Post 4600 and the ladies' auxiliary ask all residents of McHenry to fly the flag. They remind that freedom of worship is every American's privilege. "pfrOFF! Miss Mary Kinney was hos- ! tess to the Main street Bridge j club at the home of her sister, , Mrs. Earl McAndrews. The season of the McHenry : Rifle club was officially opened Sunday, April 14, with the firing of the 30-06 cup match over the army "B" course. Th6 match consisted of 10 shots slow fire 200 yards, standing; 10 shots at 300 yards, 5 sitting, 5 kneeling; 10 shots rapid fire at 200 yards, B. Target. The four high men in the contest were Bruce Nickels, who finished with 220 points; Herbert Freund, 207; William Klapperich, 205; John W. Smith, 200 points. Mr. and Mrs. Schroeder of Richmond celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at a reception held at the Schroeder home April 16. Mrs. J.A. Street, who has been with her husband, Dr. J.A. Street, since discontinuing her work at the Waukegan Memorial hospital, is nursing at the Lake Forest hospital. S.W. Smith and E.J. Hopper of Ringwood were elected delegate and alternate with others to represent McHenry county at the state convention of the Modern Woodmen of America to be held at Peoria. Mr. and Mrs. Mark L. Salomon of Chicago and Pistakee Bay, who have spent the past three months cruising on the Mediterranean and touring Europe, sailed April 13 for home on the S.S. Berengaria. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 20, 1944) Two teachers are leaving the high school faculty at the end of this term. They are Mrs. Earl lischler, better known to her piqrils as Miss Janet Dolan, and Miss Lucia Rose Rausch. , Serviceman and Mrs. Roland Jackson of Richmond are the parents of a daughter born on April 12 at the Woodstock hospital. Mrs. Jackson is the former Vivian Whiting of Ringwood. Hie proud father is at present stationed at Fort Mead, Md. Hie many friends inthis community of the Hugh Morris family were saddened to learn of the death on April 19 of Mrs. Morris, who was 62 years of age. The Morris family had resided in Fair Oaks subdivision for the past twenty-three years. Earl Conway has acceptedthe position as janitor at the public grade school taking over, the duties of the late Peter H. Weber. He had previously been employed at the McHenry Lumber company. While transacting military affairs Staff Sgt. Harold Freund passed through McHenry Friday which gave his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. L. Freund, an opportunity for a short visit with him in the Hubert Freund home. Ed Bauer was host to Rev. John Daleiden and the ushers of St. Peter's church in Spring Grove at his home near Ringwood. A meeting was held after which cards were enjoyed. A delicious lunch was served. Miss Marie Lay was guest of honor at a shower given for Jjer at Nell's White House. Mr. and Mrs. John Jung spent Sunday with their son, Eugene, at Sacred Heart Seminary in Geneva. Eugene has been quite ' ill with scarlet fever the past five weeks but is now able to be out of quarantine. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the April 9, 1959 files) In one of the biggest votes ever recorded in a McHenry township election, Leroy Smith emerged winner in a spirited race for supervisor. Smith, who has held the post of assistant supervisor for the past eight years, polled a total of 1,962 votes in the nine McHenry precincts. This Thursday evening members of Junior high, St. Mary's, St. Patrick's, Harrison and Johnsburg grade school basketball teams will be honored by the Moose lodge No. 691 of McHenry at a banquet at the high school. A new type of business, Eld's Rent-All, opened last week at 704 Front street, operated by Edward Hiennes. Mrs. Albert Barbian and Mrs. Fred Rogers have been named co-chairmen of the 1959 cancer drive for the city of McHenry. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Patzke, Mrs. Pearl Patzke, Mrs. Frances Patzke and Miss Florence Antholz spent Sunday in , F.igln where they helped Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Patzke celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. Announcement has been made of the retirement of G.H. dimming, who will have served thirty-five years with Illinois Bell Telephone company on April 6. Mr. Cumming has been associated- with the commerical service engineering and dial conversion departments at the North Shore division and for the past nine months was assigned to the McHenry business office. Rev. George W. Martin of the Community Methodist church officiated at a pretty niq?tial service April 4 which united Miss Barbara Link of Elm street and Donald B. Dixon of Fox street, McHenry. Wed.
