Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the fiies of Anril 25, 1929) The office girls of Leath and Co., at Rockford gave Miss Regina Blake, one of their number who is soon to be a bride, a linen shower on April 18. The event took place at Rockford and is one which will long be remembered by Miss Blake. Committees selected by the Kiwanis club and the local Izaak Walton League have been busy the last few days getting organized for the big "Advertising McHenry " campaign. Little William Oliver Davis, four year old son. of Mr. and Mrs. R.O. Davis of Joliet and grandson of Mrs. William Stoffel of this city, died from the effects of the bite from a mad dog. Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Donovan attended the funeral services of her brother, Charles Reece, at West Chicago. Patrick Rogers, who spent a few days in the William J. Welch home, returned to his home at Glencoe, Minn. He was accompanied home fay bis wife who has spent the past few months at the Welch home. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 27, 1944) Most Reverend John J. Boy- Ian, D.D., bishop of Rockford, will be guest speaker on Mother's Night which will be observed May 2 under the auspices of the Johnsburg community club, a gathering to be held in St. John's school hall. Lieut. Charles May, Jr., of Spring Grove received his wings at Ellington Field, Houston, Texas, April 15. Lt. May was a student at Richmond high school graduating with the class of 1941. This week the American Legion received the first card of thanks from a navy man who received some of the cigarettes sent to overseas servicemen with money contributed to the "Milk Bottle Fund." The card was from John Marston, Major General, UJS. Marine Corps, Commanding Department of the Pacific. Among those who attended the wedding of Miss Lorraine Nelson and Lieut. Edward Paul Her rick in Crystal Lake were Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Mc- Cracken and daughter, Patsy. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 23, 1959) Harry Davis of Highland Shores, Wonder Lake, social welfare public relations executive, has -been appointed to the newly created position of public relations director of the Illinois hospital association. Memorial hospital in Woodstock and McHenry hospital are member institutions of the association. Hie Dungill family concert company will be featured on the program of the Lecture Luncheon club to be held April 29 at noon at the McHenry. Country club. The Dungills are a mixture of many peoples and races. Because of the cooperation of business people and the many others who assisted in last Friday's "Operation Alert" McHenry's observance of the special civil defense program was a fine success. A lovely spring wedding took place April 18 when Father William Collins officiated at a nuptial rite that united Miss Sandra Jean Sexton and Mr. James Conway. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hay celebrated their fifteenth wedding anniversary Saturday evening with friends and relatives with a buffet lunch served at midnight. As a member of a brass quartet from Milliken university Dave Fantus of recently appeared performance in Kokoi playing for the Congress of Midwestern Presbyterian Synods. The girls at the telephone business office are wearing aprons this week reminding patrons that they are 100 per cent in favor of the springa- ling campaign being conducted throughout this month. The car of Marius Hansen of Wonder Lake, which had been left on the McCullom Lake blacktop road Friday, was discovered a few hours later with twenty-three bullet holes in the glass and body. The rear window had been knocked out completely and three tires were flat. John Jane tyke, 25, of Rt. 1, Ringwood, suffered a broken leg when he was struck by a car while walking on the Ringwood- Wonder Lake blacktop road* Boy Scouts of Troop 131 have chosen as their good turn for the month of May "Be a pal to those not well." They ask all McHenry residents to join In helping to make their project a success by depositing old discarded toys in containers which have been placed in every gas station in the city. The toys will be repaired and distributed to children's homes and hospitals in this area. - Mr. and Mrs. Alex Adanis and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Adams spent two weeks in California where they visited Pfc. Norbert Adams at Camp Pendleton. They also visited San Diego and Oceanside. An illness of several months ended in the death of Mrs. Kathryn Kempfer, 70, at Memorial hospital, Woodstock, April 21. Mrs. Mary Ann Miller, 76, a lifelong resident of this community- died <at her home on -Gfeen street, April 19, following an illness of several weeks. Virgil R. Pollock was honored at a recent dinner for being the outstanding salesman in his insurance agency for the first* three months of the year. FRI.
