Hollywood tycoons insist they know what Americans like, far better than we do ourselves. So they disdained the "Sound of Music" which is an all-time hit! It's time for the moral pendulum to swing back in the right direction! By - George W. Crane, Ph. D., M.D. • 3 CASE K-501: Orien Fifer is a famous newspaper editor in Phoenix. He vividly contrasted his visit on two successive evenings at night clubs in Las Vegas. At Buddy Hackett's closing show, Orien says the comedian started using 3-letter and 4-letter words, apparently to shock the audience into embarrassed laughter. PG. 16 - PLAINDEALER- FRI. MAY 16, 1969 Orien says that as a live-' long newspaperman, he has come into contact with sordidness and filth, such as Hackett's "descent into the garbage pail." "And now," added Orien Fifer, 'Til tell you about the last number on his program, something that sent shivers up the spine of this observer of sin. "For Ernie said while on his regular television show, he always concluded with a hymn, so he told the audience he'd like to do one now. '•A hymn in a night club? *' A spiritual in the same room that had heard blue, blue jokes only 24 hours previously? "It was hard to believe, but then Ernie sat on a stool while the young folks stood behind him, humming the accompaniment and breaking into the chorus with Ernie's deep baritone: " 'Precious Lord ... take my hand ... lead me home.' "The audience, which had been clinking glasses before dinner was served, was spellbound as the genUe words of the hymn swept through the room. "I shall remember this finale with reverence ... something Buddy Hackett wouldn't understand." Orien Fifer's terse contrast of smut entertainment with uplifting musical inspiration, merits nation-wide attention. For there is an inherent idealism in American teenagers, as well as their parents, which confounds Hollywood. That's why "The Sound of Music," though disdained by Hollywood, proved to be an alltime popular hit. Salaciousness has been inthe saddle too long! Movies have degenerated into what Orien Fifer has termed a "garbage tossing" contest, vainly trying to recruit attendance by vulgarity, perversion and crass sexual immorality. On marquees, they subhead movie tiUes with such terms as "Adulterous and Incestuous." Sodom and Gomorrah likewise degenerated in similar manner and so did the Roman Empire. It is high time to reassert Am3rica'8 pristine virtues and stress the basic themes of true love, sacrifice, courage and modesty, on which lawful society always depends. Mrs. Crane and I have quit taking our guests to our Chicago theaters because we can't stomach the insipid plots. For the modern playwrights degenerate into profanity and sexual vulgarity, mistakenly thinking the self-conscious and embarrassed tittering of a shocked audience is proof of the writer's superb humor. It isn't! Spontaneous laughter at wholesome humor differs greatly from the nervous laughter of shocked people who hear 4-letter words! True humor requires genius. But any moron can produce embarrassed laughter! (Always write to Dr. Crane in care of this newspaper, enclosing a long stamped, addressed envelope and 20 cents to cover typing and printing costs when you send for one of his booklets.) ii Political Corner HOWLETT WILL ADDRESS RALLY FOR WIN ELAND Michael J. Howlett, state Auditor of Public Accounts, will be the featured speaker at a meeting sponsored by the De- Kalb County Democratic Central committee Monday evening, May 19, at 8 p.m. The meeting will be in the party headquarters at Second street and Lincoln highway, De- Kalb. Martin David Dubin, Democratic county chairman, saidit will be the formal opening of John Wineland's campaign for State Representative from the 33rd district in the June 24 special election. "The district includes Boone and Kendall counties as well as DeKalb and parts of McHenry and Kane counties. Democratic leaders from the neighboring counties have accepted invitations to attend. We expect a strong turnout to meet Mr. Wineland and hear Auditor Howlett," Dubin said. IT PAYS TO SHOP |N McHENRY I
