SECTION 2 - PAGE 1 WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 1969 Twice Told Tales FOR^Y YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 9, 1929) Forcing the back door bandits stole $2,000 worth of goods from the Knobby Style Shop on Green street making a clear get-away with the theft not discovered until the next morning. Funeral services for the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Stilling were held at St. Mary's church May 4. The baby was two weeks old. The rural schools of McHenry community will hold their graduating exercises May 15 at the high school auditorium. The East Side Garage in McHenry announces a change of ownership. W.B. Curtis, an expert mechanic from Waukegan has purchased the business from Herman Schaefer. Mr. Curtis was formerly the head mechanic for a large motor bus concern in Waukegan and comes to McHenry highly recommended. He specializes in ignition work, generators and starters. Dwight A. Dodge, a former resident of McHenry, died at the home of his son, Frank, in Buchanan, Mich., on April 24 at the age of 83 years and 7 months. His death resulted from bronchial asthma and heart trouble from which he suffered for eight months. May 9 a wedding service took place at St. Joseph's , church, Elgin, that united in marriage Miss Regina Barbara Blake of McHenry and Mr. John A. Reinert of South Elgin. The niqptial Mass was read by Rev. Fr. H.E. Ouimet. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 11, 1944) Old residents of this community are this week mourning the passing of George Meyers who died May 9 at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Charles Egan, in Chicago. The agedman had suffered *a heart attack from which he never recovered. Two brothers, Corp. Eugene and Sgt. Nick P. Miller have both arrived safely in England. Their brother, Jerome, is stationed at Fort Custer, Mich. The grand opening of the McHenry Town club under the new proprietorship of William R. Comes, will be held May 12 and 13. Mr. Comes, who lived for a time several years ago at Lake Defiance, has now moved with his family to McHenry. Mr. Comes operated the Lincolnwood Inn at Lincoln and Devon for ten years. Harry Case of McHenry will spend May 12 and 13 in Chicago as a guest of Prairie Farmer-W.L.S. He is now one of twenty-five midwest Future Farmers of America who chose with their leaders this all expense paid trip as their Prairie Farmer-W.L.S. rural youth award for superior achievement in farming and leadership. Miss Evelyn Sanders of Spring Grove and Mr. Harry Gustafson of Chicago were united in marriage May 6 in the Grace Lutheran parsonage in Woodstock, the Rev. Roger C. Kaufman officating. Sidney Smith of Route 2 McHenry, donated his blood when the mobile unit of the Red Cross blood donor service visited the Revere Copper and Brass company recently. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 14, 1959) / Eleven members of the McHenry post office received National Safety Council safe driver award cards and pins from Postmaster Ray McGee. The attractive pins carry the number of years that each man has enjoyed accident free driving. The presentations were to Eugene P. £chaefer for 2 years; Henry Reese, 5 years; Thomas H. Wiles, 2 years; Richard J. Weber, 9 years; Paul Patzke, 9 years; Paul KarlB, 6 years' Robert H. Hess, 1 year; Robert C. Krier, 2 years; George Stock, 12 years; Thomas L. Lawson, 1 year; Charles Brda, 12 years. Thomas, 5 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Bookman, Jr., of Lakeland Park, was injured but not seriously when he was struck by a car in the subdivision. The Crime Stoppers will hold a meeting May 25 at St. Mary's gym. This will be a special night of movies and a magic show. Judge Arnold Rauen will speak to the children on court procedures. The two story Latimer "house at West Shore Beach, McCullom Lake, suffered extensive damage as the result of fire. McHenry firemen who were called to the scene believe a flue pipe leading from an oil hot water heater to the chimney became overheated causing the fire. Richard Antonson, 17 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl. L. Antonson of Grove avenue, received word that he had been awarded the Burns scholarship to Noire Dame university. Richard plans to enter Notre Dame next fall enrolling in the school of engineering. A twenty-four year old Eastwood Manor man, Merle E. Kaufmann, was killed Sunday morning, May 10, in a head-on collision on Rt. 59A near Ivanhoe. Announcement has been made of the recent engagement of Miss Gail Brefeld to Arnold E. Drumm of DuQuoin. Thirteen young teen-agers have been named merit award winners from seven local grade schools. They were guests of honor at the recent annual banquet of the McHenry and Township Kiwanis clubs. Junior high, Pamela Sexton and John Bailey; St. Mary's, Margaret Parisi and Thomas Gates; St* Patrick' s, Kathleen Foran and Kenneth Martin; St. John's, Carol Sompel and Neil Freund; Johnsburg Public, Janice Ripley and Kenneth Thoren; Ringwood, Patricia Low; Harrison, Kathryn Kostal and Douglas Sellek. Sunday, May 10, was an important day for the Cusack family including members from McHenry for on that day three priests assisted a fourth in the family at his first solemn high Mass in St. Angela church, Chicago. Rev. Donald E. Cusack, 26, who was ordained the previous Thursday at Mundelein. Father Cusack is the brother of Thomas Cusack of Pistakee Bay. A spring wedding solemnized in Zion Lutheran church on Saturday, May 2, united Miss Esther M. Eshoo of Elmwood Park and Harold E. Walter of McHenry. The double ring ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Carl A. Lobitz. Mr. and Mrs. William Neumann, Jr., returned recently from a few days trip to Mackinac Island and Holland, Mich. Herman F. Jahnke, 80, a resident of McCullom Lake for 19 years, died at the Villa nursing home May 11. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lawson are the parents of a girl born May 6 at Memorial hospital, Woodstock. paoooooooe SERVICE NEWS Terrance P. Doran, 19-yearold son of Mr. and Mrs. John Boehm, has recently enlisted in the United States Air Force. Terry is receiving his basic training at Lackland Air Force base, Texas, and as of this writing is attached to CMR No. 1, Squadron 3704, Flight 625. James W. Doran of the United States Navy, who recently spent two weeks with his parents, the John Boehms, has been transferred from LeMoor, Calif., to the Naval Air station at Jacksonville, Fla. Jim, his wife, Lynn, and their two children, Jimmy and Julie, will be making their home in Florida during his six-month stay at this base. While at home, Jim was notified by his commanding officer that he has been promoted to Aviation Ordnance Man First Class.
