Earl Walsh SO I HEAR Sports Editor Well, Petie Schaefer, you got us a response to your stories of last week. Judy Smith came in to see us and left the following note: "I called Petie Schaefer at 5 p.m. not 10 p.m. I did not tell him to tell you to put it in your pipe and smoke if. I told Petie, because it's true, you and he are McHenry's biggest Sox Cans* He says Geno and Donnie Schaefer are -- So I reminded him he is their father -- like 'Leader of the Tribe* and you, Mr. Walsh, are his equal as supporting the Sox! We do enjoy vour "So I Hear" sports articles. It's great fun. We miss Petie in the store/How about the 11-0 win the Cubs had over the Astros Friday night? " Wild Pitches and Balks" don't win ball games -- Sometimes, but if8 risky! Agreed -- wouldn't it be great fun to play you in the World Series! Petie would lose another $5 to us! And, I would bet 100-1 he ate those berries in Florida! Ask Louise!! Take care and God bless. Judy Smith" AMERICAN LEGION BALL PLAYERS -- Due to late notice, some boys wanting to play American Legion baseball this year did not register. Now, here's your chance. > Call Lloyd Freund (385-1794) and he will put you on thfe list. The tram will start practice next week so lefs get going with your registrations. We plan to print reports and box scores of the Legion team games. Be watchin'. Mc Henry High's Frosh-Soph track team took seven first place sports and had eight in second place to win a triangular meet with Marian Central and Car me 1. Score: McHenry 77Vi Marian Central, 57; Carmel, 24& Northern lllinl lowmin N«wf The Northern mini Bowmen's MAY MARATHON turned into a rainathon! Tarps appeared over the picnic area and bratwurst was cooked out. However, the Nite Shoot will be rescheduled for Saturday, May 31, followed by the June Club Shoot cm June 1. High scorers of this cold and rainy field shoot were both sight shooters: Berlin Campbell and Irene Trumble. Of the 69 hardy archers, Northern Illini Bowmen members first place trophy winners were: both Marcus Englehardt and son Keith, Irene Trumble, Leah Way, Joanne Martin. Second place medal winners were Oscar Sommer, Ray Martin, Richard Goldman. A bronze third place medal went to Les Adams. Fox Valley archers of Cary won the handicapped team shoot. WHEN YOU GOTTA' GO... Sixty years after it was condemned, the old administration building at Pontiac Penitentiary is getting attention. On April 7 wrecking crews began razing the building. According to Warden Joseph C. Vitek, its demolition is in keeping with Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie's plans to modernize Illinois' penal system and to replace old state buildings. Marine Radio Can Be Boaters' Best Friend In addition, Judy brought in a large cardboard poster (all about the Cubs). The poster was made by Terri Smith, daughter of the Huppy Smiths. Terri went to a heap of work to make it up so we surprised Judy by putting it right smack in our front window. We have had Cub banners so why not posters. More fun! Mary Etten doesn't miss a thing. We mentioned Marian Krause Donnelly winning a tennis tournament back some forty years ago. Right above our column we ran a picture of the present tennis team at McHenry high. What got lost inthe shuffle was mention that Marian and Bill have a son, Jim, on the varsity tennis team. He was in the picture. With readers like Mary Etten, we have to stay on our toes. Tension of this type is natural and spurs the student on to do his or her best. But, one in fifteen really is upset and develops what is known as preexamination strain. Both gooc and bad students are susceptible. Becoming overly apprehensive and anxious during the day, they lose sleep at night. Despair sets in when the} think of the upcoming exams and cannot recall what they read just a minute before. Others fall prey to psychosomatic systems as a result of these fears: headaches develop, tearfulness, depression and nervous dyspepsia. These symptoms make a good alibi for poor grades. Hiese students are going thru a period of stress. They should realize that their natural efficiency is not impaired and that, more than likely, they will pass. As yet, no pill has been invented that can make a student more intelligent. MORE NEXT WEEK If they had been invented, you can bet that BOLGER'S DRUG STORE would have them in stock. Springfield, 111., -- When a boating accident occurs, no piece of equipment is more important than a marine radio -- if the operator keeps cool and gives complete information. "A signal can mean the difference between life and death," Ken Gruenewald, boating supervisor for the Illinois Department of Conservation, said. "But the boater must keep his wits and send the information needed by the Coast Guard and other rescue agencies. Sometimes a signal is received but is useless because an excited operator did not include enough details." MAYDAY If a person is in dire peril, the proper format for a distress signal is the word MAYDAY repeated three times on a distress channel, 2182 kilohertz or 156.8 megahertz. Then the operator should say: "This is" and give the name of his craft three times. The operator should give the location and description of his boat and an account of the help needed. The call should be repeated until it is answered. If the boater has a citizen's band radio the same procedure may be followed. The important thing to remember is to give complete information, Gruenewald said. Everyone cm board a craft equipped with a radio should be familiar with the correct procedure for transmitting distress signals. CHAIN-O-LAKES Gruenewald pointed out that the Coast Guard, marine units of the Chicago Police Department and the safety boat of the Department of Conservation are on duty on Lake Michigan during the boating season.. Coast Guard craft, sheriff's boats and conservation department boats often patrol inland navigable waters like the Chain-O-Lakes, the Illinois river and the Mississippi river. Many of these boats are equipped with radios and will provide help to a boater in trouble. On the Mississippi, Illinois and Ohio rivers there are other ways to obtain help, Gruenewald explained. A boater can notify a lockmaster or a towboat captain that he is in distress. The radio operator should give the person monitoring the call the number on the nearest mileage sign. This information can then be relayed by telephone to the closest source of assistance. Points were scored, on a handicap bases, as follows: 1 for one over par, 3 for a par and 5 for a birdie. Barb Weber had greatest number of points with 50, followed closely by Floss 0*Connell with 47 and Anna Johnson's 46. Idaho has become the 30th stiate to adopt reflectorized "safety" license plates, and will begin issuing them next year. If possible, anchor out of the current and in the lee side of the wind. Once you've picked a spot, swing your boat into the wind and run a bit past where you'd like the boat to end up. Ease the anchor overboard (never throw it -- tangled line has a way of causing all sorts of headaches) and allow it to set, then let the boat drift back about five or six times the water depth. Finally, wrap the anchor line around a cleat and motor backwards a short ways to help secure, the anchor. That's all there is to it. If strong winds are expected, it's always a good idea to use at least two, and sometimes three, anchors: one from the bow, one from the stern and one (if necessary) from midships. When weighing anchor, just motor ahead slowly, pulling in the anchor line, until you're directly over the anchor . . . then pull the anchor free._ There is much more to anchoring a boat than just dropping the "hook." Properly used, an anchor will hold a pleasure boat secure against all but the strongest current or wind. Used incorrectly, though, an anchor is just that much more weight for the boat to lug along as it drifts downstream. There are many types of anchors on the market today; the boater's choice depends largely on where it will be used, A Yachtsman anchor, for ex- WED. All members of the band are urged to be at this practice session. Under the direction and leadershiD of Dolly Mazzarella, the ample, will hold well in grass, sand and rocks, but not mud. A Mushroom type, on the other hand, will work well in mud, but not so well on other bottoms. Other common types of anchors in use today include the Spade Palm (mud, sand and grass), Grapnel (rocks), Navy (mud) and Danforth (all types of bottoms). Selecting the spot to anchor is important, too, reports the Johnson Motors News Bureau. Make sure the water is deep enough to allow the boat to rise and fall on the waves Without grounding. In tidal waters, check the tables to make sure your boat won't be left high and dry at low tide. Even though the band has not yet performed in public, (the first concert being scheduled for May 26 at the Senior Citizen club members card party), they have also been requested to play fOr ^a local club in early June. From the response of the members, they are looking forward to both engagements.
