How cap I clean an oil mop? A. You-can perforin a good job with hot soapsuds in which a little ammonia has been added. Or, soak the mop in soda water, then wash in hot suds. Rinse well, and shake occasionally while it is drying. To apply fresh oil, pour polish into a shallow pan, and allow the mop to stand in this until it is absorbed. Q. How can I produce a quick adhesive for postage stamps or envelopes that have lost their mucilage? A. A drop or two of egg white or some evaporated milk will < serve nicely. Q. How can I protect the backs of mirrors from scratches? A. By coating these backs with clear shellac. Q. What can I do about plastic curtains that have become badly wrinkled after washing and drying? A. Lay the curtains on a smooth surface, such as a table or the floor, and cover them with magazines. Leave them this way overnight or a little longer, and they will' usually look as though they had been ironed -- which is an advantage, since plastic cannot be ironed. Q. How can I remove a cork that is tightly stuck in a battle? A. If you'll dip a cloth into boiling water and wrap it around the neck of the bottle, the heat will usually expand the glass enough to permit easy removal of the cork. Q. How can I clean copper easily and economically? A. By rubbing it with a lemon- half dipped in salt, rinsing with hot water, then polishing with a soft cloth. Q. What is a good, economical way of waxing a linoleum floor? A. Save your old wax candles, and when you have accumulated a sufficient number of these stubs, shave them into very hot sudsy water, and the resultant mixture will give your linoleum a good, glossy Gnish. Q. What is the best way to iron embroidery? A. By turning it face down on a turkish towel, then pressing on the wrong side. This -brings out the depth of the pattern, instead of flattening it. Many such practical tips are contained in my household book. Q. What is a good emergency method of mending a break in the plastic frame of eyeglasses? A. Try holding the break together with softened paraffin, then adding a drop of acetone to the break before the paraffin hardens. Q. How can I prevent my bathroom mirrors from clouding up when I bathe or shower? A. A light coating of glycerin over the glass will usually keep your mirrors clear. Q. How can I concoct a sour cream substitute? A. By beating a tablespoon of vinegar with a cup of evaporated milk. Q. How can I deal with oil spots on a concrete driveway? A. One simple, and often effective, method is just to pour some naphtha on the spots, then brush away with an old broom. Q. What can I do when perspiration odor still clings to washable materials after they have been laundered? A. Soak for an hour or more in warm water containing three or four tablespoons of salt to each quart of water. Or, sponge the affected areas with warm water containing a little vinegar, apply powdered pepsin, and work into the cloth. Let stand for several hours, keeping the spot moist, then brush off the pepsin, and rinse by sponging with clear, warm water. Q. How can I prolong the life and beauty of cut flowers? A. By giving them a goingover with some of your hairspray. ' Q. What is a simple treatment for tarnished silverware? A. Rubbing over it with a soft cloth dipped in toothpaste, then following with a warmsoapsuds washing, rinsing, and wiping dry. Q. How can I remove paint spots and spatters from tile or porcelain? A. Usually with nail-polish remover. One complete section of my household - hints book deals with spots and stains of all kinds. DOROTHY P. AISSEN Mrs. Henry J.
