BUILDING PLAN AT HARRISON IS REVISED After receiving an estimate of $140,000.00 over the budget for the addition to Harrison school, Wonder Lake, the Board of Education, along with the superintendent and architect, have reworked the entire plan. After studying the cost of construction, it was found that a large share of the cost increase was due to the planning of a two-story structure, larger than necessary toilet facilities in the physical education shower rooms, remodeling of an interior classroom, and a provision for a larger library resource center than is immediately needed. By reducing or eliminating many items mentioned, the cost has been reduced to the budget figure. Further study is being made prior to contract bidding to see that the addition meets quality standards so as to avoid false economies. Present plans call for bidding in June, awarding the contract in July, work to start in August, 1969, and occupancy in September of 1970. A meeting with parents of next year's fifth through eighth grade students at Harrison school has been called for Wednesday, June 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the school. Robert Bright, school superintendent, in making the announcement, indicated that the meeting will cover the new instructional program for the 1969-70 school year. Mrs. Stella Rortvet, fifth grade teacher at Edgebrook school, is retiring at the end of this year. She has twentynine and one-half years to her credit in the profession. Reporter PASS TWO SCHOOL REFERENDA IN NINETY DAYS The critical need for funds for Spring Grove Elementary School District No. 11 to operate the next fiscal year made it necessary to pass two referendums or join with another district. When the community was apprised of the need and a survey was made, there was r)o doubt of the outcome of the two referendums. The second one passed May 17, within ninety days of the first. The Spring Grove community has expressed the desire to maintain an elementary school for which there is some local control. This community plans to provide adequate salaries for teachers and the quality of programs commensurate with productive education for the children. Community committments beyond the state requirements, and working within the Illinois School Code, will provide the funds to operate a quality program for the school. In 1968 the educational rate was 1.07 per cent. Each referendum now will provide a .21 per cent rate increase per $100 assessed valuation for the educational fund.
