Twice Told Tales FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the Hies of June 6, 1929) The ninth annual commencement exercises were held at the' community high school auditorium May 3i, That this large class of thirty-three is a popular one was made evident by the packed house of relatives, friends and alumni. The Sherman Hill school house was sold at public auction last week and went to C.E.Sherman for a consideration of $240. The school was the property of District 39, which was organized fifty-eight years ago. The school has been in use until last year when District 39 consolidated with District 15. Charles Howard, well known in McHenry, died at his home in Woodstock June 3. The first four grades, with their teachers, of the public school enjoyed a picnic in the park Wednesday noon. Everyone brought a lunch which tasted delicious out in thS" fresh air and for dessert each one received an Eskimo pie donated by Father CPRourke. ^ Arnold Rauen of Spring Grove, who is enjoying a two weeks vacation from his duties at the bank in the city, left Monday morning on a trip to Indiana and Kentucky. He will be the guest of the Benedictine Fathers at Jasper, Ind., for a number of days. From there he expects to motor to Louisville, Ky., to call on old classmates and also visit a friend, at Gethsemane, Ky., at the monastery. All traffic is now using the new road across the mill pond owing to the fact that Boone Creek bridge is closed to traffic. A new cement floor has been laid on the bridge and other repairs made. John R. Knox, the proprietor of the Sinclair Oil station, is building a barbeque stand on his property next to the oil station on Route 61. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 8, 1944) Two McHenry girls have this week completed their courses in nursing from Chicago hospitals and will now enter a field which daily is calling for more help to satisfy the needs on the war and home fronts. The first of these girls to graduate was Miss Marie Nix of this city. Marie, along with seventy-one other graduates accepted her diploma at graduation ceremonies June 5 in the auditorium of the nurse's home at Cook County hospitalfPrior to entering into the nursing profession, Marie was for two years employed by the McHenry Plaindealer. Miss Bode is well known here where she graduated from the community high school a few years ago. Miss Eleanor Young was honored at a Surprise shower on June 4 held at the home of Mrs. Leroy Wagner. Mrs. Loren Miller and baby are residing in one of the Wolff apartments on Elm street while her husband is in service in Ogden, Utah. Members of the graduating class of the McHenry community high school in 1907 gathered at the home of one of them, Mrs. Chancey Harrison last week at a class reunion. The meeting especially honored John Larson of Tecumseh, Mich., who has been enjoying a visit here. Mrs. Herman Rehberg and daughter, Helen, of Dundee formerly of McHenry, entertained at a kitchen shower in honor of their daughter and sister, Ruth, who will become the bride of Stanley Brown of McHenry on June 24. TEN YE^VRS AGO (Taken from the files of June 11, 1959) Chi Sunday, June 14, Dr. and Mrs. Henry Freund will observe their golden wedding anniversary by holding open house for relatives and friends at their home on Idyll Dell road. The Albert M. Jourdans have moved from Ponca street, Cooney Heights, to Riverside Drive, Pistakee Terrace. It was a big day in McHenry on Wednesday, for Illinois' most distinguished citizen, Gov. Williatn G. Stratton, paid a visit to the city. He was a guest of McHenry County Republican Central committee at a luncheon given in his honor at the McHenry Country club at noon. Two McHenry youths, Scott Bacon, 20, and Phillip Ricker, 22, received only minor injuries when their car went out of control on Thelen road near Johnsburg and struck a tree. Henry Houck has been employed as guard at the beach on Riverside drive from 10a.m to 4:30 p.m. every day through the summer season. The Misses Mary Lou and Suzanne Miller of Wonder Lake were guests of honor at an open house party held at their home following high school graduation Friday evening. Many of their friends, relatives and neighbors called with best wishes and lovely gifts for the twins. June 25 was announced as^ Division 20 Play Day. The Kiwanians voted to help the Wonder Lake volunteer fire department clean up after the summer carnival, which will be held the last week in July. President Ward Ehredt appointed past presidents, Myers, Cristy and Freund, as the nominating committee for the coming year's slate of officers, with the new year to start Oct. 1. The committee later selected the following slate: Ward Ehredt, president; Joe Schuler, first vice-president; Bill Dicker, second vice-president; Art Christopher, secretary; and Horace Wagner, treasurer.
