V FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Jiihe 13, 1929) Rev. Hoover, pastor of the Ringwood and Greenwood Methodist churches and supervisor at McHenry and Volo, graduated on Wednesday from the Garrett Biblical Institute at the Northwestern university, Chicago, at which time he received his B.D. degree. William C. Coates, the last member of the family of Joseph and Eliza Coates, passed away at his home June 5. During the electrical storm Tuesday night the summer home of Dr. Milton L. Smith was struck by lightning and burned completely to the ground. Hie summer home was located on the east side of Fox River in Smith's Sunny bank subdivision and was a large bungalow. The Oakland Motor Car company today announces another addition to its rapidly growing sales organization in the appointment of the Rauen Motor Sales as Oakland-Pontiac dealers here for the smart new Pontiac Big Six and its companion car, the colorful new all, American by Oakland. Both lines of cars are displayed at the new show rooms at the corner of Main and Front streets, West McHenry. What will probably be one of the greatest engineering projects of its ldnd ever undertaken in the middle west is now actually underway in the Bull Valley area. The Jones and Winter company* Isrge resort , operators of Chicago, have acquired all of the land surrounding this section of the basin, starting near the old Barnard grist mill and running south over three miles^ They will have, when the present damming operation is completed what will probably be the second largest lake in Northern Illinois, surrounded on all sides fay rolling, wooded shore lines. Nelson, who according to a telegram received by his wife the former Miss Lucille Nimsgern of Spring Grove, "died of injuries received in an accident in Iran." McHenry and the surrounding community has only two girls who are members of the Marine Corps and one of these is Pfc. Mary Brefeld of this city. She entered , the service in August 1943 At the annual meetiisg for election of officers last Thursday evening, the local Council Knights of Columbus elected Arthur Tonyan as Grand Knight for the ensuing year. One of the city's most respected citizens, William S. Schneider, 55, was taken by death June 13, 1944. Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Harrison, Mrs. Lonnie Smith, Mrs. Henry Stephenson and Mrs. Roy Harrison of Ringwood attended the fiftieth anniversary banquet of the Richmond Eastern Star, Saturday evening. The grand matron and patron of the state were present for the occasion. W.H. Tammeus of Greenville, 111., has been selected farm adviser for McHenry county to 'succeed John. H. Brock, ac-' cording to an announcement released by Arthur Hoppe, McHenry County Farm Bureau president. Lieut. Roland McCannon, who recently resigned as superintendent of schools in McHenry county, reported for duty at Camp Schuyler, New York. TEN YEARS AGOr (Taken from the files of June 18, 1959) Through the efforts of the McHenry fire department resuscitator squad a 16 year old girl from Carpentersville was revived following her near drowning near Fritzsche's Estates. John Phipps, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Phipps of Fox street, narrowly escaped serious injury on Monday mornihg when he was struck by a car on the bridge on Rt. 120. He was cm his bicycle enroutfe to junior high where he was taking summer school classes. Two popular assistant priests in McHenry parishes this past week received word that they will be transferred to other churches in the Rockford diocese, Rev.. Fr. John E. Reuland leaving St. Mary's church and Rev. Fr. William P. Collins being transferred from St. Patrick's parish. In a beautiful ceremony performed at Immanuel Lutheran church in Crystal Lake June 13 Miss Frances Arleene Handrock became the bride of Mr. Ronald W. Kloss. Miss Handrock is well known in McHenry where she taught physical education in the high school this past year. More than 100 people gathered at the high school auditorium to witness an unusually fine treat. Ann Varese, talented actress and singer, presented a .revue of a leading Broadway musical comedy for the benefit of the McHenry Woman's club. Mrs. Varese donated net proceeds of her fee, amounting to $80, to the local library. Steve Schweikert is proud of the first place plaque that his string of forty-five fish earned for him. pGfiJZ. Speaker at last week's meeting was Dick Mikus, who directs the Harrison grade school band. Plans for next year include a forty-piece varsity band ior band for one and two - year members and a third unit for beginners. The director asked for help in sending six members to a music camp near Bloomington, conducted by Illinois Wesleyan college. The Kiwanis voted to help in sending one child there.
