Mike Janik, with some timely hitting and defensive play at the shortstop, led the team in this victory. Bob Kuechel started this game and pitched 6 innings of fine ball. Grayslake - 3 Oh, my aching arm! We threw out the first ball last Sunday as the American Legion baseball team played Woodstock at A.P. Freund field. Legion men were on hand for a flag raising ceremony -- all part of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the great American Legion organization. We didn't dare take the advice to practice through the week. Thought the arm might go dead. So we saved up all our strength for one pitch. Gary Fairchild was our catjer and you should have seen hirrNsmile when we asked if he wanted a piece of steak to put in his mitt before we wound up. Glad they didn't make us go to the mound for the pitch. We may have needed a relay man. Somebody said we could kick it. It was fun, but back of it all was a serious side. Our Legion men took time to put on their rifle squad uniforms and be present. They are interested in our young men. Lloyd Freund is managing the home team -- a good break for those boys. Lloyd's experience, in local and organized baseball gives him knowledge of how the game should be played. Besides he still has that old u spirit. Lloyd's wife, Doris, is typing reports for our sports page. We add a thank you to her. Our wife remarked'how fortunate we are in our community to have men who will give their time and talent to help our young men. The world isn't all bad. We are getting some pictures ready and expect a report on the game for our second issue this week. And, how about you Shamrocks and Tigers getting some reports^to us? No^jve have to wait another year to act like kings. Fathers' Day came and went. It's one day of the year when Dads like to think they are the boss around the house. Our neighbor, Bill Kreutzer, came over to tell us that "Si" (or should it have been "Cy" all these years?) Meyers had something to say about our reference to the Cubs scoring 19 runs in (me game. He wonders how many games it would take the Sox to score that many runs. Would you believe two? -- three --Well, how about six? But, if our Sox could play all their games in Milwaukee the odds might get better. They haven't lost this year in the land of beer and bratwurst.
